The Red Storm received a national seed on Monday for the ninth time in program history. In 2011, the Johnnies earned the no. 9 seed after downing archrival UConn for the program's league-record ninth BIG EAST Championship. The Red Storm's highest-ever seed came in 2008, when the Johnnies were tabbed as the no. 3 team in the nation in a year that saw St. John's reach the College Cup.
The Johnnies' at-large selection snapped a five-year absence from the field of 48, as the Red Storm last earned a bid to the NCAA Tournament in 2013. That year, the BIG EAST sent five teams to the NCAA Tournament in the conference's first season of its current 10-school configuration. This year, the league sent four teams to the NCAA Tournament with two squads, St. John's and No. 3 Georgetown, earning national seeds. Providence advanced to the second round after defeating NJIT on Thursday.
The Red Storm has now made the NCAA Tournament 21 times in 29 opportunities under the direction of Head Coach Dr. David Masur. In those 20 previous berths, the Red Storm has recorded four College Cup appearances, including the 1996 national title The Johnnies have won at least one game in 13 of their last 16 NCAA Tournament berths, including 10 straight apperances in the round of 16 between 1996 and 2005.
Belson Stadium will play host to an NCAA Men's Soccer Tournament contest on Sunday night for the 16th time since its opening in 2002. The Red Storm owns a record 10-4-1 in NCAA matches at Belson, including a streak 10-game undefeated streak from 2003 to 2008.
Prior to Monday's selection show, the Red Storm compiled in a record of 13-4-1, including a 6-2-1 mark in BIG EAST play. The Johnnies' 13 regular season wins were the highest such total for the team since the College Cup season of 2008, while their six conference victories helped propel the Johnnies to a second place finish in the final BIG EAST regular season standings. The Red Storm has not slipped outside the RPI top 10 once this season and spent four weeks in the top four, including a week at no. 1.
Through Wednesday's first round games, the Johnnies rank inside the top 25 nationally on both sides of the ball, as their 2.00 goal per game scoring average ranks 24th while their 0.81 goals against average is good enough for 22nd. The Red Storm has also recorded shutouts in nine of its 18 apperances this season, good enough for the nation's 13th best shutout percentage.
The Orange, who went 7-6-5 during regular season play with a 2-4-2 mark in the ACC, earned a spot in the second round after defeating Atlantic 10 champion Rhode Island on Thursday night at SU Soccer Stadium. Tied at two apiece with time winding down in regulation, Syracuse was awarded a penalty kick in the 87th minute. Ryan Raposo, who had already scored one goal and assisted on another, converted on the chance and sealed the victory for the Orange. The sophomore from Hamilton, Ont., has been the catalyst for the Syracuse on offense all season long, leading the team and ranking ninth nationally with 15 goals. Raposo has also chipped in seven assists on the campaign for 37 points, a total that ranks second in the ACC and sixth in Division I.
Four other members of the Orange have chipped in at least four goals on the season. One of those four, freshman forward Luther Archimede, scored Syracuse's lone goal in an ACC quarterfinal loss to Virginia and added another marker last night against the Rams.
Stony Brook transfer Christian Miesch has played a majority of the team's minutes between the pipes this season, compiling a 6-6-4 record with a 1.65 goals against average and a .627 save percentage. While Syracuse's 2.11 goals per game average is a few spots ahead of the Red Storm in the national rankings (18th), the Orange currently sits at no. 128 in the nation in goals against average (1.54). Only Wright State (1.66, 143rd) has a worse goals against average among the 32 teams still alive in the tournament.
The Red Storm and the Orange, BIG EAST foes for nearly three decades, sport a vibrant series history dating back to 1982. In 34 matches all-time between the two programs, St. John's owns a 19-9-6 advantage, including a 9-2-3 edge in games played in Queens. The only teams that St. John's has faced more times in its history than Syracuse are Seton Hall (41), Villanova (39) and Georgetown (36).
St. John's and Syracuse have met twice since they last were BIG EAST foes with both of those meetings resulting in one-goal victories for the Orange. Syracuse defeated St. John's, 1-0, at Belson Stadium on Sept. 6, 2014, thanks to a seventh-minute goal. Two years later in Central New York, the Orange recorded another one-goal victory in diametrically opposite fashion. Leading 2-1 after 81 minutes of play, St. John's saw No. 6 Syracuse net an equalizer in the 82nd minute before tacking on a golden goal in the 105th.
Matt Forster is the only member of the Red Storm who has any experience playing the Orange, as he logged 22 minutes as a freshman during that 2016 outing. Syracuse also only has one player remaining who saw action during that match three-plus years ago: senior John Austin Ricks.
The Red Storm closed out the BIG EAST portion of series history with Syracuse on a 15-game unbeaten streak, going 12-0-3 against the Orange from 1997-2012. The year before the streak started, Syracuse was one of just two teams to beat St. John's during the national championship season of 1996, as the Red Storm went 22-2-2.
The game will be broadcast live worldwide on ESPN3 with Drew Casey and John Fanta calling the action from Queens. Tickets are available through the St. John's Ticket Office at RedStormTix.com and 1-888-GO-STORM.
