QUEENS, N.Y. (Nov. 25, 2019) – The St. John's track & field and cross country programs will host the seventh installment of Olympic Day on Dec. 8, prior to the start of the Bill Ward Invitational held at Ocean Breeze in Staten Island.
Doors will open at 10 a.m., followed by the Kiddie races at 10:15 a.m. Headlining this year's Olympic Day will be 2018 graduate Maya Stephens, who will speak about her international experience at 10:30 a.m. The former Johnnies' standout has had an eventful 2019, competing for the Canadian National Team at the World Relays in May and the World Championships in the Fall.
Following Stephens' conversation, St. John's will compete in the Bill Ward Invitational following Olympic Day with 60 meter hurdles slated for 11 a.m.
"We invite all family, alumni and friends to come enjoy a great day celebrating St. John's Olympic heritage and see the Red Storm in action as they kick off the 2019-20 track & field season," Head Coach Jim Hurt said.
Seventeen former Johnnies have represented their respective countries in 14 Olympic Games since 1952, starting with Connie Darnowski at the Helsinki Games. St. John's alumni have not missed an Olympics since 1984, and will have representation in nine straight Games when Marsha (Henry) Seagrave heads to Tokyo in 2020, serving the Head Manager of the United States National Team.
If you are interested in attending Olympic Day, please RSVP to hurtj@stjohns.edu or leave a message at 718-990-6159.
