Red Storm will once again play a loaded national slate
QUEENS, N.Y. (Dec. 11, 2019) – Looking to return to the NCAA Tournament for the third time in the last four years and win the program's 10th BIG EAST title, St. John's will face yet another challenging schedule in the upcoming 2020 campaign.
Under the direction of Hall of Fame Head Coach Ed Blankmeyer, St. John's will take on six teams that qualified for the NCAA Tournament a season ago. Four of those NCAA teams will make the trip to Queens for games at Jack Kaiser Stadium.
The Red Storm will kick off the 2020 season in The Peach State, playing three games in as many days against as many opponents in the Atlanta area. The Johnnies will play their season opener on Friday, Feb. 14, against Kennesaw State before taking on Georgia State the following afternoon. The team will then wrap its opening weekend with a Sunday showdown at Georgia Tech, taking on a Yellow Jackets team that finished 43-19 a season ago and hosted an NCAA regional.
After opening the season south of the Mason-Dixon, the Red Storm will then head west for a three-game set against California beginning on Friday, Feb. 21. The Johnnies will take on a Bears squad in Berkeley went 32-20 a year ago, finishing fourth in the Pac-12 and earning an at-large spot in the NCAA Fayetteville Regional.
The Red Storm will then return east before beginning a spring break trip that will span the nation. Beginning on Friday, Feb. 28, the Red Storm will take on Charlotte for a three-game set in the Queen City. Following a midweek tilt at Presbyterian on Tuesday, March 3, in Clinton, S.C., the Red Storm will head to Las Vegas for a three-game series with the Runnin' Rebels of UNLV beginning on Friday, March 6.
After spending some time in Sin City, The Red Storm will not leave the state of New York for nearly a month. The Johnnies are scheduled to host their first local midweek matches during the second week of March, as Saint Peter's will visit The Jack on Tuesday, March 10, before Iona comes to town the following day. The Red Storm will then kick off a split weekend series on Friday, March 13, traveling to the Bronx for a showdown with reigning Atlantic 10 Champion Fordham. The Rams will then make the trek to Queens on Saturday and Sunday.
The Johnnies will welcome another 2019 NCAA Tournament participant to The Jack on Tuesday, March 17, when the Red Storm hosts reigning Patriot League Champion Army for the first matchup between the two teams since 1998.
The following weekend, the Red Storm will entertain its premier non-conference home opponent of the season, beginning a three-game series with the Anteaters of UC Irvine on Friday, March 20. Last season, Irvine went 37-17 but missed out on an at-large bid to the NCAA field of 64 after finishing second in the Big West standings. The Anteaters took two of three from St. John's last year in Southern California.
Following a pair of midweek tilts against Fairfield on March 24 in Queens and Wagner on March 25 in Staten Island, the Red Storm will begin another split series against a local foe on Friday, March 27, with a game against Stony Brook at Jack Kaiser Stadium. After heading out on Long Island for a Saturday tilt at Joe Nathan Field, the Red Storm and Seawolves will wrap their series on Sunday at The Jack.
After playing a stretch of 11 of 14 games inside the friendly confines of Jack Kaiser Stadium, the Red Storm will begin a five-game road swing with a midweek matchup against local rival Columbia on Wednesday, April 1, in Manhattan.
Two days later, the Johnnies will begin BIG EAST play at Villanova with three games against the Wildcats before hitting the road again for a midweek tilt at Albany on Tuesday, April 7.
The Johnnies' BIG EAST home-opening series against Butler will be modified because of Easter Weekend, as the teams will play a doubleheader on Thursday, April 9, before concluding the series with a single game on Saturday, April 11.
The Red Storm will travel to Hofstra on Wednesday, April 15, before welcoming Georgetown to The Jack for its second straight BIG EAST home series beginning on Friday, April 17.
After welcoming Hofstra and Fairleigh Dickinson to Queens for a pair of midweek matchups on April 21 and April 22, the Red Storm will begin a BIG EAST road swing with a series against longtime conference rival Seton Hall in South Orange. The two teams will play a night game on Friday, April 24, before closing out the set with day games on the 25th and 26th.
Another five-game week awaits the Johnnies after Seton Hall, as they will welcome Iona on Tuesday, April 28, before traveling to Brookville the following afternoon to take on new-look LIU for the first time. The team will then head to Cincinnati for its final BIG EAST road series of the season, facing off with Xavier in a three-game set beginning on Friday, May 1.
Upon their return from Cincinnati, the Johnnies will close the regular season with seven straight games at home. The Red Storm will host Marist on Tuesday, May 5, before welcoming Maine for a three-game set beginning on Friday, May 8. St. John's will then play host to defending BIG EAST Champion Creighton at Jack Kaiser Stadium in a season-ending series starting on Thursday, May 14 and concluding on Saturday, May 16.
Prasco Park in Mason, Ohio, will host the BIG EAST Baseball Championship for the third consecutive season beginning on Thurs., May 21. The Red Storm won the first conference tournament hosted at the venue in 2018, as the Johnnies claimed their league record ninth BIG EAST crown and secured their 37th appearance all-time in the NCAA Tournament.
