Five different players finish in double figures for the Red Storm
Behind a stellar team effort that saw five different players finish in double figures, the St. John's women's basketball team defeated Yale, 80-66, on the road Friday evening.
Kadaja Bailey and Qadashah Hoppie paced the way for the Johnnies in scoring with 13 points apiece. Bailey also brought down eight rebounds while dishing out two assists. Hoppie recorded a trio of dimes and four steals on the evening.
Stamford, Conn., native Tiana England stuffed the stat sheet for St. John's with 12 points, seven boards and a team-high four assists.
Freshmen Emma Nolan and Leilani Correa both logged 11 points for the Johnnies.
In her first time back on the court in four games, Alisha Kebbe made an immediate impact, pulling down a team-high nine rebounds and registering eight points.
Upon her return to her hometown, the New Haven Conn, native Alissa Alston finished just shy of double figures with nine points on a 4-for-8 shooting clip from the floor.
The Johnnies got the scoring started first, as Hoppie finished at the rim on the opening drive to give St. John's an early 2-0 lead. The two teams traded blows over the next few minutes, with the Johnnies holding a one-point advantage, 11-10, at the midway mark of the first quarter.
St. John's (5-3) outscored the Bulldogs, 11-7, down the stretch of the opening stanza to lead, 22-17, after 10 minutes of action.
Yale (6-3) logged four unanswered points in the first 30 seconds of the second frame, pulling the contest within one, 22-21. Hoppie stopped any chance the Bulldogs had of getting ahead when the junior guard made a drive to the basket. This kicked off a 14-2 run for the visiting team, giving the Johnnies a 36-23 edge half way through the second quarter.
The Bulldogs began to chip away at the Johnnies lead, piecing together a 9-0 run in the closing minutes of the first half. Despite Yale's late offensive streak, the Johnnies held on to a four point lead, 36-32, at the intermission.
Hoppie paced the way for the Johnnies on both sides of the ball in the first half. The Staten Island native netted a team-high nine points on a 4-for-7 shooting from the floor to go along with four steals in the first 20 minutes of action.
Coming out of the break, the Bulldogs knocked down an early three to pull the contest within one. The Johnnies responded, firing off six unanswered points to build its lead back up to seven, 42-35.
With the Johnnies still ahead, 46-37, at the 5:34 mark, Yale went on a 10-2 tear to cut its deficit to one, 48-47. That was as close as the Bulldogs would get over the remainder of the third, as the Red Storm rattled off a 7-0 streak to lead, 58-49, after 30 minutes of action. Bailey capped off the Johnnies late third-quarter run with a layup followed by a corner three.
The Long Beach native carried her offensive spark into the final frame, scoring on the opening drive. The two teams treaded blows over the next few minutes with St. John's ahead, 65-58, and just under five minutes to play.
With St. John's holding an eight point lead, 68-60, and under three minutes to play in regulation, Yale converted on four attempts from the free throw line to cut the Red Storm's lead in half, 68-64. St. John's put together one final offensive push to take its largest lead of the night and come away with the double-digit victory.
The Johnnies return to action on Monday night inside Carnesseca Arena, welcoming Army for a 7 p.m. contest.
