SALT LAKE CITY (Dec. 9, 2019) – In the third North American Cup of the season, 10 current and former Red Storm fencers competed against some of the top fencers in the nation this past weekend. St. John's performance was highlighted by two-time U.S. Olympian Daryl Homer, who earned a gold medal in the Division I Men's Saber tournament.
In pool play, Homer tallied six victories and outscored his opponents by 24 touches to advance into the Table of 128. The individual saber silver medalist at the 2016 Summer Olympics cruised his way to the championship match, defeating his opponents by a margin of six touches or more. The Red Storm alum bounced Andrew Doddo in the finals, 15-6, to claim his ninth gold medal at a North American Cup event.
Isis Washington, the women's epee gold medalist at the October North American Cup, fell one bout short of vying for back-to-back gold medals. The 2015 graduate won four of her five contests in pool play, reaching the Table of 128 as the No. 20 seed. Washington fell just short of securing a spot in the championship match, dropping her semifinal tilt to eventual runner-up Margherita Guzzi Vincenti, 15-13.
The remaining eight St. John's representatives fenced in the Division I men's epee tournament. Three former Johnnies placed inside the top-25, including Curtis McDowald, who finished in ninth place. Cooper Schumacher and Adam Rodney placed 20th and 22nd, respectively.
First-year saber specialist Tariq Karam placed in the top-25 in his second-straight North American Fencing Cup, finishing in 23rd place. Red Storm fencers Nathan Vaysberg and Shomari Moore also had impressive weekends as they finished inside the top-50 out of 240 total fencers in the men's epee competition.
The next North American Fencing Cup will be held in Charlotte, N.C., from Jan. 3-6. The Johnnies will return to action as a team at the annual St. John's Invitational which will be held at Taffner Field House on Saturday, Jan. 18, 2020.
