This year’s invitational features the top six programs from the 2019 NCAA Championships
QUEENS, N.Y. (Jan. 13, 2020) – After dominating the competition with a perfect 9-0 record at the Brandeis Invitational five weeks ago, the St. John's fencing program returns to action this Saturday as Head Coach Yury Gelman's squad will host their prestigious annual home invitational at Taffner Field House beginning at 10 a.m.
St. John's will be hosting five of the most illustrious fencing programs across the nation. The teams making the trip to Queens include defending national champion Columbia, Harvard, Notre Dame, Ohio State, and Penn State. The six programs have combined to win 29 of the 30 team NCAA Championships since it became a co-ed sport in 1990. Penn State has claimed 13 of those national titles, while Columbia won its third national championship over the last five seasons this past year.
In 2019, all six of the schools participating in this week's invitational collectively placed in the top six spots at the NCAA Championships. Five of the six schools competing this weekend also garnered at least one individual national champion.
Last season at the St. John's Invitational, the Red Storm men's fencing squad came away with one victory as the men's side defeated Ohio State, 14-13, who ranked No. 7 in the College Fencing 360 Coaches Poll at the time. The men's epee team finished the invitational with a 25-20 record. Nathan Vaysberg, Ivan Zagoruiko, and Shomari Moore combined for 21 of the 25 men's epee victories.
The women's team finished in sixth place at the 2019 St. John's Invitational against some of the best fencers in the nation. Karolina Kaleta and Katarzyna Lachman led the way with a team-high 11 victories apiece. The Notre Dame's women's squad went 4-1 to bring home the women's title in back-to-back seasons.
The Red Storm swept through the field in its lone team competition of the 2019-20 campaign. Coach Gelman's squad capped the event with a perfect 9-0 record at the Brandeis Invitational. The women's fencing squad defeated MIT, Brandeis, Wellesley, Yale, and Boston College to finish 5-0 as a collective unit. The men's program waltzed through four fencing programs to finish the tournament with a 4-0 record.
Lachman and the defending national champion in women's saber Karolina Cieslar led the women's squad, securing a combined 27 victories in 30 bouts. Freshmen Jan Jurkiewicz and Karol Lademann impressed in their first team competition as they finished with 10-2 and 8-1 records, respectively.
The Johnnies will have a quick turnaround as they head to Philadelphia for the Penn Invitational on Sunday, Jan. 19.
