The Johnnies and the Blue Demons will showdown live on FS2
Fresh off a victory over No. 8/7 Marquette at Carnesecca Arena, the St. John's women's basketball team will look to pick up its fifth-straight win, as the Johnnies welcome DePaul to "The World's Most Famous Arena" on Sunday afternoon.
Â
Tip-off is set for 1 p.m. on FS2 with announcers Lisa Byington and Monica McNutt on the call.
Â
The Red Storm (13-12, 6-8) enters Sunday's matchup on the heels of the program's best win in terms of national rankings since Feb. 18, 2012, when the Johnnies knocked off No. 2/2 UConn. In that game former St. John's standout and current assistant coach Shenneika Smith netted a last second three-pointer to snap the Huskies' 99-game home-court winning streak.
Â
Tiana England led the way for the Johnnies, eclipsing the 20-point mark for the second time in her career and the first time this season. In addition to her scoring touch, England, who leads the BIG EAST in assists, also recorded a team-best six helpers, three rebounds, one block and one steal for the Red Storm.
Â
While England's stellar stat line grabbed the headlines after the Marquette upset, the Red Storm as a unit was clicking on all cylinders. Alisha Kebbe (17), Qadashah Hoppie (13) and Curteeona Brelove (10) all chipped in double figures for the Johnnies.
Â
As a team, the Red Storm did a stellar job protecting the ball, coughing up just eight possessions while forcing 12 Marquette miscues. The Red Storm has now committed eight or fewer turnovers in three of its last four victories.
Â
Under Head Coach Joe Tartamella, the Johnnies are 3-2 at MSG and 9-5 overall dating back to the 2003-04 season. This meeting between the Red Storm and the Blue Demons will be the first-ever showdown between the two programs at "The Mecca of College Basketball."
Â
In the Red Storm's most recent contest at MSG, Akina Wellere paced the Johnnies in scoring with 17 points en route to a 64-55 victory over conference foe Xavier.
Â
St. John's and DePaul (18-7, 9-4) will meet for the second time this year on Sunday, a little less than a month after the Red Storm fell to the Blue Demons, 73-64, in Chicago. DePaul enters Sunday's contest riding a three-game win streak, including a 94-85 victory over Seton Hall on Friday night.
Â
The Blue Demons are led by a trio of players, as Mart'e Grays (14.5 ppg), Chante Stonewall (14.2 ppg) and Ashton Millender (12.8 ppg) are all averaging double figures this season.
Â
As a team, DePaul ranks second in the BIG EAST in scoring offense, netting 82.6 points per game. The Blue Demons lead the league in assists, averaging 19.0 per contest, good enough to sit eighth overall in the nation.
Â
After taking on the Blue Demons, the Johnnies will make their final road trip of the regular season, traveling to Villanova to take on the Wildcats on Friday, Feb. 22, at 7 p.m. St. John's will then wrap up the two-game road swing at Georgetown on Sunday, Feb. 24. Tip-off with the Hoyas is slated for 2 p.m.
