St. John’s Holds Off Villanova, 4-3

Oceane Garibal clinches the match with a comeback, three-set victory.
QUEENS, N.Y. – The St. John's women's tennis team returned to its winning ways on Sunday, defeating Villanova, 4-3, at the USTA National Tennis Center.
In doubles play, St. John's (5-3) quickly won the first two matches from the No. 1 and 2 positions, earning them the first point of the afternoon.
In the No. 3 match, Delia Arranz and Gabriela Tenorio wasted no time as they defeated Villanova's Kaylan Rotman and Ellie Zimmerman, 6-2.
The duo of Jessica Livianu and Najah Dawson clinched the doubles point for the Johnnies at the No. 1 position as they took care of Villanova's Claudia Althans and Lindsey Evans, 6-3.
In singles play, junior Livianu wrapped up her singles match against Evans in the No. 1 match, 6-1, 6-1, to give St. John's their first singles point of the match.
Villanova and St. John's would continue to trade wins, leading up to the final singles with the score tied at three.
Olaya Inclan Solis took care of her opponent in the No. 4 match, outdueling Alexandra Vesikallio, 6-4, 6-1.
Dawson, Arranz, and Jenelle Downer all lost their singles matching, forcing Oceane Garibal to win her No. 3 match. After losing the first set, 4-6, the junior from France battled her way to win the last two sets, 6-1, 6-3, clinching the victory for the Red Storm.
The Johnnies return to action on Tuesday, March 5, as they travel to face the Richmond Spiders at 2 p.m.
