Red Storm to face NJIT and Harvard on the road beginning on Friday evening
QUEENS, N.Y. – The St. John's women's tennis team will continue its spring season with two matches this weekend, taking on NJIT in Newark, N.J., in a Friday evening match before traveling to Cambridge, Mass., to battle Harvard on Sunday.
Coach Lauren Leo's squad returned to its winning ways on Sunday, Feb. 24, as the Johnnies defeated Villanova, 4-3, at the USTA National Tennis Center.
The duo of Jessica Livianu and Najah Dawson clinched the doubles point for the Johnnies at the No. 1 position as they took care of Villanova's Claudia Althans and Lindsey Evans, 6-3.
Villanova and St. John's traded wins in singles play, forcing a decisive, fourth singles point with the score tied at three. After losing the first set, 4-6, Oceane Garibal battled her way to win the last two sets, 6-1, 6-3, in the game-deciding match for the Red Storm.
On Friday, the Johnnies will square off with a red-hot NJIT squad that is currently boasting a 10-1 overall record. The Highlanders have won their last four matches, including an impressive 4-3 victory over St. John's rival, Seton Hall on Feb. 22. Freshman Joleta Budiman holds a combined 7-1 record in her last four matches.
The Red Storm last squared off with the Highlanders on Jan. 27, 2017, sweeping NJIT, 7-0, in Newark, N.J. Playing in the No. 1 spot, Livianu earned her second singles victory of her career in a 6-0, 6-1, victory over Rafaella Sampaio.
Harvard awaits the Red Storm on Sunday with an 8-4 overall record. The Crimson are coming off a two-match winning streak, having swept Boston University and Southern New Hampshire on Feb. 23. Natasha Gonzalez obtains a combined 5-2 record over her last four matches.
St. John's and Harvard met in the regular season last year on Jan. 26, in Cambridge, Mass. The Johnnies fell to the Crimson, 6-1, in last season's spring opener. The Red Storm was led by the doubles pairings of Jaide Collins /Zofia Stanisz and Olaya Inclan Solis/Irina Preotescu as both pairings captured victories to earn the doubles point.
The Johnnies will look to pick up some positive momentum heading into its second BIG EAST match of the season on Friday, March 15 at Georgetown.
