Delia Arranz Earns BIG EAST Athlete of the Week Honor

The senior won both of her singles matches in three sets to lift the Johnnies to a 2-0 weekend
QUEENS, N.Y. – The St. John's women's tennis team received its second weekly award of the year as Delia Arranz was named the BIG EAST Women's Tennis Athlete of the Week Tuesday evening following a combined 3-1 record in singles and doubles play to help lead her team to a pair of victories.
"It is great to see Delia selected as BIG EAST Athlete of the week," said head coach Lauren Leo. "She competed extremely well this past weekend against NJIT and Harvard."
The senior from Barcelona, Spain had a stellar week on the tennis court, as she finished with a perfect 2-0 record in singles play.
On Friday against NJIT, Arranz clinched the match with a three-set victory over Mayar Eltony in the No. 5 singles match, 6-2, 3-6, 6-1.
On Sunday, the senior tied the match at three points apiece in the come-from-behind win over Harvard by pulling off an epic comeback in her No. 5 match over Irene Lu, 5-7, 6-4, 6-3.
"Delia demonstrated a lot of heart, grit and composure during both her three set singles matches," added Leo.
St. John's resumes play on Friday, March 15, for its second BIG EAST match of the season as the Red Storm travels to Washington, D.C. to take on Georgetown.
