Oceane Garibal clinches the match with a comeback, three-set victory
QUEENS, N.Y. – The St. John's women's tennis team won its fourth-straight match Friday afternoon, defeating Georgetown in Washington, D.C., 4-3.
"We started a little slow in doubles play, but we were able to come back strong in singles to grab the four points needed for the win," said head coach Lauren Leo.
The Johnnies dropped their second doubles point of the season on Friday. Delia Arranz and Gabriela Tenorio lost the first doubles match to Georgetown's Elena DeSantis and Anna Short, 6-3. Cecilia Lynham and Sofie Moenster clinched the doubles point for the Hoyas, outlasting Olaya Inclan Solis and Oceane Garibal in the No. 2 match, 6-4.
In singles play, junior Jessica Livianu wrapped up her singles match against Evans in the No. 1 match, 6-1, 6-1, to give St. John's their first point of the match.
Georgetown and St. John's traded wins in the next two matches. After Inclan Solis dropped her No. 4 match to Risa Nakagawa, freshman Najah Dawson defeated Sydney Goodson in the No. 2 match, 6-4, 6-1.
Tenorio was forced to retire in her No. 6 match, requiring St. John's to win the last two matches in order to earn the victory.
Delia Arranz, this week's BIG EAST Women's Tennis Athlete of the Week, tied the match at three points apiece, defeating Anna Short in the No. 5, 6-3, 6-2.
The final match fell on the shoulders of Garibal. The sophomore clinched the match with a come-from-behind victory, outdueling Elena DeSantis on the No. 3 court, 4-6, 6-3, 6-4.
