The Red Storm looks to increase its winning streak to six with two victories this week
QUEENS, N.Y. – The St. John's women's tennis team will continue its spring season with two matches in the next four days. The Red Storm will be hosting Butler in a Thursday afternoon match at the USTA National Tennis Center before traveling to Philadelphia, to battle Penn on Saturday.
Coach Lauren Leo's squad has played its best tennis in the month of March. The Johnnies (8-3) have won their last four matches, dating back to their 4-3 victory against BIG EAST foe, Villanova, on Feb. 24. Three of the four wins have been decided in the last singles match.
In its last match against Georgetown, The Red Storm dropped its second doubles point of the season on Friday. Last week's Women's Tennis Athlete of the Week, Delia Arranz, and Gabriela Tenorio lost the first doubles match to Georgetown's Elena DeSantis and Anna Short, 6-3. Cecilia Lynham and Sofie Moenster clinched the doubles point for the Hoyas, outlasting Olaya Inclan Solis and Oceane Garibal in the No. 2 match, 6-4.
In singles play, junior Jessica Livianu wrapped up her singles match against Evans in the No. 1 match, 6-1, 6-1, to give St. John's their first point of the match. Freshman Najah Dawson defeated Sydney Goodson in the No. 2 match, 6-4, 6-1.
The final match fell on the shoulders of Garibal. The sophomore clinched the match with a come-from-behind victory, outdueling Elena DeSantis on the No. 3 court, 4-6, 6-3, 6-4.
On Thursday, the Johnnies will square off with a Butler squad that currently holds a 10-8 overall record. The Bulldogs are 2-2 in March and are led by Lauren Marx (3-0 in her last three matches) and Emily Near (3-1 singles and doubles record in her last two matches). Thursday's match marks the first-ever meeting between the two programs.
Penn awaits the Red Storm on Saturday with a 10-3 overall record. The Quakers have won four of their last five matches in March. Penn is led by Marta Kowalska, who is 4-2 in singles and doubles play in her last three contests.
St. John's and Penn met in the regular season last year on March 24, losing to the Quakers, 4-3. Inclan Solis and Irina Preotescu won St. John's lone doubles match, 6-4, on the No. 2 court.
In singles play, Inclan Solis picked up a 7-6, 6-4 victory on the No. 2 court and Livianu claimed a thrilling, three-set victory, 7-6, 6-4, 10-5.
The Johnnies will look to pick up their fifth and sixth consecutive victories before heading into its next BIG EAST match on Saturday, March 30 at Seton Hall.
