St. John’s improves to 9-3 on the season after winning its fifth-straight match
QUEENS, N.Y. – The St. John's women's tennis team won its fifth-straight match on Thursday afternoon, defeating Butler at the USTA National Tennis Center, 5-2.
The Johnnies (9-3) kicked off the contest by scoring their tenth doubles point this season. Delia Arranz and Gabriela Tenorio picked up the first doubles win over Butler's Nina Bertino and Lauryn Padgett, 6-2. Jessica Livianu and Najah Dawson clinched the doubles point for the Red Storm, outlasting Butler's Sarah Linn and Emily Neal in the No. 1 match, 6-3.
In singles play, junior Livianu picked up the first singles win of the day against Neal in the No. 1 match with a clean sweep, 6-0, 6-0, to gain the Johnnies their second point of the match.
St. John's maintained its momentum over the next couple of matches, clinching two more singles win. Lauryn Padgett retired in the No. 4 match against Arranz, 6-4, 4-0. Dawson defeated Linn in the No. 2 match 6-2, 6-0, giving the Johnnies the first three singles points.
Caroline McAuley of Butler was able to capture the first point of the day for Bulldogs after Tenorio, retired in her match, 6-3, 2-0. The Johnnies bounced back in the No. 3 match as junior Oceane Garibal outdueled Bertino in three sets, 6-0, 4-6, 6-2.
The Red Storm returns to action on Saturday, March 23, as the Johnnies travel to Philadelphia to take on the University of Pennsylvania at 1 p.m.
