Marissa Rizzi and Peyton Cody combine for six RBIs in Saturday’s victory
QUEENS, N.Y. (March 16, 2019) – Marissa Rizzi and Peyton Cody led the St. John's softball team with a combined six RBIs in the squad's win over Holy Cross, 7-1, at the St. John's Invitational.
The Red Storm's production leader Rizzi continued to string together multiple hits on Saturday. The Manorville, N.Y., native tallied her eighth multi-hit game of the season, her fifth with two hits. She finished 2-for-2 with two runs, three RBIs and her seventh homer of 2019. The Johnnies' starting first baseman has boosted her season batting average from .409 to .438 through three games this weekend.
Freshman Cody matched her teammate with a two-hit, three-RBI performance of her own against the Crusaders. After Madison Morris fanned the first three batters in the opening frame, the Mission Viejo, Calif., native lined a two-run single up the middle, to put the game out of reach. Fellow rookie Meisha Murray and Rizzi came around to score and put the Johnnies up, 2-0.
Following three scoreless half-innings, St. John's (10-13) delivered back-to-back jacks in the bottom of the third. Rizzi smacked a two-run dinger to right field for her second hit, extending the Red Storm's lead to four, 4-0. In the next at-bat, Cody hit an identical home run over the opposite field wall to take a 5-0 advantage.
Murray scored two of the Red Storm's seven runs and recorded her first career RBI on a base knock to center in the fourth. Sophomore Gabriella Conca came around to score, expanding the home squad's lead to six, 6-0, through four frames.
For the third-straight inning, St. John's posted at least one run. Gretchen Bowie led off with a double to right field in the bottom of the fifth. Following the two-bagger, Rizzi drove in her third run of the afternoon on an RBI single to center, giving the Johnnies their largest lead, 7-0.
Holy Cross (2-13) scored its first run on a sacrifice fly to right, cutting their deficit to six, 7-1, in the sixth frame.
Morris retired the final three batters in order, picking up her seventh win of the 2019 campaign. She allowed one run on three hits with six strikeouts in her seven innings of work. The senior right-hander has struck out 83 batters through 17 appearances.
The Red Storm will finish its first home weekend against Holy Cross on Sunday. First pitch is slated for 12 p.m.
