Gretchen Bowie delivers a walk-off, two-run double in St. John’s third-straight win
QUEENS, N.Y. (March 17, 2019) – The St. John's softball team extended its winning streak to three on a walk-off, two-run double by Gretchen Bowie to defeat Holy Cross, 8-0, in five innings at the St. John's Invitational on Sunday.
In the fifth frame, the Red Storm registered four straight hits to start the inning before Bowie ended the game. Freshman Kamryn Tiumalu drove in her third run of the afternoon on a bases-loaded single to set up Bowie for the walk-off two-bagger. The Sparta, N.J., native knocked in her 98th and 99th career runs to enforce the run rule.
Angela Saric locked down the Crusaders, allowing just one hit in five innings of work with four strikeouts. The Oakland, N.J., native retired the side in order on three occasions, including the first two innings, to pick up her fourth win of the season.
After the freshman starter held Holy Cross (2-15) off the base paths in the opening frame, the Red Storm registered its first run on a bases-loaded walk by Christina Melendez, giving the home team a 1-0 lead. With the RBI base on balls, the senior right fielder sits two knock-ins away from 100 for her career. The Fullerton, Calif., native drove in a team-leading seven runs over the weekend slate.
In-between the scoreless second and fourth frames, the Johnnies posted a four-run third, starting with a two-run homer by Marissa Rizzi. The junior first baseman remained hot in Sunday's matchup, delivering her third home run of the weekend and eighth of the season to extend the Johnnies' lead, 3-0. The Manorville, N.Y., native posted a .700/.786/1.600 slash line with six RBIs and five runs scored in four games.
Freshman Peyton Cody recorded a hit in four-straight games after driving a double to right field in the third inning. She finished the weekend with a team-high eight hits and seven runs scored.
Tiumalu knocked in her rookie counterpart and Melendez on a two-run double down the third base line, pushing the Johnnies' lead to five, 5-0.
St. John's tagged Holy Cross with three runs in the final inning to enforce the run rule with an 8-0 victory.
The Red Storm will remain at home for the BIG EAST opener next weekend as the Johnnies take on Providence in a three-game series on March 23-24.
