Austin Briggs leads the Red Storm at the conference tournament
The St. John's men's golf team fired a final-round 311 (+23) to place ninth at the BIG EAST Championship on Sunday at the Callawassie Island Golf Club.
"We hit some good shots all week but ended up in some difficult positions," Head Coach Mal Galletta said. "We all had a great time. The members of the Callawasssie Island Golf Club are very welcoming and the BIG EAST puts on a first-class tournament."
Austin Briggs paced the field for St. John's, carding a three-round 226 (+10) to finish in a tie for 14th place. The senior capped off the season with 14 par shots to turn in a final-round 79 (+7).
Tyler Gerbavsits saw his best effort come in Sunday's final round, carding a two-over 74 to move up three spots and finish in a tie for 31st. Gerbavsits' final-round effort was highlighted by a trio of birdies. The Huntington, N.Y., native registered a three-round score of 235 (+19).

"Looking ahead to next year, the returners and incoming freshman are hard workers," Galletta said. "I am sure they will be ready for the start of the year in September."
After gaining the lead in the second round, Marquette pulled away on the final day of competition, shooting a seven-under 281 over the last 18 holes to capture its third BIG EAST title in the last five years.
Individually, Xavier's sophomore Garrett Wood won medalist honors by firing an even-par 216 in the 54-hole tournament.
