Men’s Golf to Host The Doc Gimmler This Weekend

Red Storm to host home tournament at Bethpage State Park Red Course
QUEENS, N.Y. – The St. John's men's golf program will host the Doc Gimmler this weekend at the Bethpage State Park Red Course.
After not having the event last year due to the 2025 Ryder Cup, the Red Storm return to Bethpage for its annual home event. The action will tee off on Saturday morning at 7:30 a.m. for 36 holes with the final round on Sunday at the same time.
The Johnnies will compete in a 14-team field against Boston College, Bryant, Columbia, Hofstra, Iona, Lafayette, Lehigh, LIU, Providence, Rhode Island, Towson, UConn and Yale. The Red Storm starting line-up will feature- Josh Yan, Curro Martinez, Matthew DiFiore, Eli Weidmann and Max McColgan.
The Red Storm roster is comprised of four returners and a pair of newcomers in Yan and Martinez. Yan, a New York native was the state's no. 2 ranked junior golfer and won four straight NYSPHSAA Section 9 Championships at Newburgh Free Academy. Martinez arrives in the Big Apple after spending his freshman year at Memphis, where played in four events for the Tigers in 2025-26.
The standout sophomore trio of DiFiore, Weidmann and McColgan is back for a second year under Head Coach Phil Wildermuth. Weidmann competed in the U.S. Junior Amateur Championship this summer, while junior Joseph Dolezal played in the U.S. Amateur Championship at Merion Golf Club.
St. John's finished runner-up two years ago with Peicheng Chen taking home medalist honors at The Doc Gimmler Red & Black, as the tournament returned to the Black Course for the first time in 28 years. In the last 30 years, the Johnnies have won their home event five times (1997, 2000, 2002, 2021).
In 2013, St. John's renamed the event from The McLaughlin to The Doc Gimmler to honor former Red Storm student-athlete and golf coach Jack "Doc" Gimmler. Gimmler came to St. John's in 1945 and helped lead the baseball team to the school's first College World Series in 1949.
After graduating, Gimmler went on to become the head athletic trainer for St. John's before taking over as the head coach of the men's golf team and associate director of athletics.
Gimmler guided the men's golf program to its first-ever BIG EAST title in 1979 and led the Johnnies to nine conference championships in the first 11 years of the league's existence. Under Gimmler's direction, St. John's finished either first or second in the BIG EAST in all but one season between 1979 and 1990. The longtime coach led St. John's to 10 Metropolitan Championships and five NCAA Tournament appearances during his tenure.
Gimmler passed away in 1996 but will forever be remembered for his impact on collegiate golf, collegiate athletics, and St. John's over his more than four decades of service.
