St. John’s Prepares for Three Midweek Matches

The Red Storm awaits ASA Brooklyn and Sacred Heart on Wednesday; travel to Hofstra on Thursday
QUEENS, N.Y. – The St. John's men's tennis team will commence its final week of the regular season on Wednesday with a doubleheader against ASA Brooklyn and Sacred Heart at the St. John's Tennis Courts. Following the two night matches on Wednesday, the Johnnies will venture to Hempstead, N.Y., on Thursday to square off with Hofstra at 3 p.m.
The Red Storm will start the day with ASA Brooklyn at 11 a.m., before returning to courts on campus to battle Sacred Heart at 7 p.m.
St. John's enters Wednesday's doubleheader with a 13-5 overall record, coming off two impressive road victories over BIG EAST foes DePaul and Marquette this past weekend.
On Sunday against Marquette, the Red Storm and the Golden Eagles traded wins in the No. 1 and No. 3 matches. After Luka Sucevic and Andrei Crapcenco dropped their doubles match, 6-2, in the No. 1 bout, Alan Nunez Aguilera and Ognjen Trejgut forced a decisive third contest for the doubles point, winning on the No. 3 court, 6-4.
Marquette gained the first point of the match, clinching the doubles point on the No. 2 court, 6-3, over Dusan Vukicevic and Alex Roszkowski.
In singles play, Marquette was able to secure their only singles point of the match when Alvaro Verdu defeated Andrei Crapcenco, 6-4, 6-4.
The No. 3 bout is where the Johnnies took control of the contest and never looked back. Aditya Vashistha defeated Luis Gomez in three sets, 1-6, 6-3, 7-5.
Vukicevic and Udayan Bhakar secured straight-set victories in the No. 4 and No. 5 contests.
Trejgut sealed the Red Storm's third conference win of the season with a three-set victory over Fran San Andreas on the No. 6 court, 6-7, 6-4, 6-2.
ASA Brooklyn contains a 4-2 record this spring. Yassir Aknin is 5-1 over the Avengers last three contests.
St. John's defeated the Avengers in the last meeting between the two teams, 5-2, on Feb. 28, 2013.
The Johnnies will look to win the second of its two matches on Wednesday against Sacred Heart. The Pioneers head into the nightcap with a two-match winning streak. Sacred Heart's Seiji Hosokowa is 3-1 in his last two matches over Farleigh Dickinson and Mount St. Mary's.
St. John's swept Sacred Heart, 7-0, in the last year's meeting between these two programs on Jan. 20, 2018.
The Red Storm faces a Hofstra squad that boasts a 12-6 spring record. The Pride has won two of its last three matches. Hofstra's latest loss came at the hands of a Drexel Dragons team which the Johnnies defeated on March 16, 4-1.
Last season, the Johnnies swept the Hofstra Pride at the St. John's Tennis Courts, 4-0, on April 5, 2018.
After St. John's three-match midweek slate, Head Coach Dillon Pottish's squad will compete in its final regular season match against BIG EAST rival Villanova on Saturday, April 13, at 10 a.m.
