Antico, LaSorsa Earn Second Team All-Region Spots

Juniors helped St. John’s reach the BIG EAST Baseball Championship for the 16th straight season
QUEENS, N.Y. (June 12, 2019) – On the heels of standout junior campaigns, Mike Antico and Joe LaSorsa were both named to the American Baseball Coaches Association/Rawlings All-Northeast Region Second Team on Wednesday afternoon.
Antico, an outfielder from Colts Neck, N.J., who is currently playing with the Wareham Gateman of the Cape Cod Baseball League, led the team and ranked 22nd nationally with a .386 batting average this spring while also pacing the squad with six home runs and four triples. In BIG EAST play, Antico hit .431, good enough for second in the conference behind BIG EAST Player of the Year Jake Holton of Creighton. A terror on the basepaths, Antico proved successful in 20 of his 24 stolen base attempts on the year. His 20 swiped bags were the most by a St. John's player since Matt Wessinger stole 34 bases in 2012. Antico, the team leader in walks with 38, reached base at a .500 clip and slugged .598 on the season.
After spending his first two collegiate seasons as a reliever, LaSorsa shifted to a starting role in 2019 and excelled beyond all expectation. The junior southpaw turned in a 6-5 record with a 1.66 ERA, the latter of which ranks seventh nationally. In 86.2 innings of work, LaSorsa struck out 67 batters while walking just 33 and holding opponents to a .199 average. The Kathonah, N.Y., native pitched his best when it mattered most, keeping opponents off the board over his final 15.1 innings of the year. Against Seton Hall on May 16, LaSorsa threw eight shutout innings against the Red Storm's bitter local rival. In the BIG EAST Championship opener a week later, LaSorsa blanked Xavier for 7.1 frames, needing just 78 pitches to record 22 outs.
St. John's has now had 10 players selected to All-Region teams since 2017.
