Seattle Mariners Call up Matt Carasiti

Former Red Storm standout to begin his second Big League stint
QUEENS, N.Y. (June 23, 2019) – Matt Carasiti, a former St. John's standout currently in his eighth year of professional baseball, has earned a call-up to the Seattle Mariners from Triple-A Tacoma.
This will mark Carasiti's second stint in the Big Leagues, as the New Britain, Conn., native made 19 appearances with the Colorado Rockies in 2016.
Carasiti, a sixth round pick of Colorado in the 2012 MLB Draft, has been stellar in the minors this year, compiling a 2.67 ERA in 16 appearances for the Iowa Cubs before signing on with the Mariners organization earlier this month. In four appearances with Tacoma, Carasiti recorded two saves in as many opportunities and allowed just two earned runs.
Carasiti spent 2018 in Japan with the Yakult Swallows, going 8-3 in 39 appearances, 13 of which were starts.
Before moving overseas, Carasiti spent 2017 in Triple-A split between the Albuquerque Isotopes and the Iowa Cubs. He recorded 21 saves in 25 opportunities and struck out three times as many batters as he walked.
Carasiti rose quickly to the majors in 2016, needing just six scoreless appearances in Triple-A Albuquerque before the Rockies gave him his first call up. He spent the majority of that campaign with the Double-A Hartford Yard Goats, recording 29 saves in 33 opportunities while posting a 2.31 ERA with 43 strikeouts and just seven walks in 39.0 innings of work.
Carasiti began his pro career with the Grand Junction Rockies of the Pioneer League in 2012 before playing two full seasons with the Asheville Tourists in the South Atlantic League. Carasiti was promoted to the Modesto Nuts of the Class-A Advanced California League in 2015 and excelled in his first full season as a closer, converting on 22 of his 24 save chances.
A two-time BIG EAST Champion who made three NCAA appearances with the Red Storm between 2010-12, Carasiti earned the Jack Kaiser Award as the most outstanding player of the 2012 BIG EAST Baseball Championship, allowing just two earned runs in 6.2 frames of the Johnnies' title-clinching victory over USF. The following week, he picked up the win in the Red Storm regional-clinching win against North Carolina in Chapel Hill. That year, Carasiti was the 198th pick of the MLB Draft and one of four Johnnies taken in the top six rounds.
