Mascarella Signs Free Agent Contract with the Kansas City Royals

Two-time First Team All-BIG EAST back stop inks deal with 2015 World Series Champs
QUEENS, N.Y. (June 24, 2019) – Former St. John's back stop Wyatt Mascarella has signed a free agent contract with the Kansas City Royals, making the two-time First Team All-BIG EAST selection the fifth member of the 2019 Red Storm to earn a spot with a major league organization.
With Mascarella's signing, St. John's has had five or more players drafted or inked to free agent contracts following each of the past three seasons.
During his two-year career in Queens, Mascarella hit .296 with 10 home runs and 65 RBIs, reaching base at a .397 clip and slugging .469. 36 of his 99 career hits with the Red Storm went for extra bases.
After transferring from McHenry County College, Mascarella played an integral role on a St. John's squad that captured the program's ninth BIG EAST Regular Season and Tournament titles in 2018. He hit .340 while reaching base at a .394 clip and slugging a team-best .535, helping the squad win 40 games for the 10th time in program history. Mascarella proved stellar in the NCAA Regional at Clemson, going 5-for-13 (.385) with a pair of home runs.
This past year, Mascarella was unanimously selected to the all-conference first team after anchoring the Red Storm to its league-record 16th consecutive appearance in the BIG EAST Baseball Championship. He drew 40 walks on the campaign, good enough for tops on the team and tied for 10th on the program's single-season record list. As a result of his increased discipline at the dish, Mascarella drove up his on-base percentage by five points (.399) despite hitting 84 points lower than the season before (.256).
Mascarella hit five home runs as a senior, three of which came against eventual BIG EAST Champion and Corvallis Regional Finalist Creighton.
Four members of the pitching staff that Mascarella helped develop were selected earlier this month in the 2019 MLB Draft. Gavin Hollowell went in the sixth round to the Colorado Rockies before the Twins grabbed Sean Mooney in the 12th. Joe LaSorsa and Jeff Belge went three picks apart in the 18th round to the Rays and the Dodgers, respectively.
