Red Storm to give free admission to Thursday’s contest in exchange for clothing donations in support of Bahamas hurricane victims
The St. John's women's soccer team will continue its four-game homestand on Thursday night, welcoming former BIG EAST foe Syracuse to Belson Stadium. Kick-off is slated for 6 p.m.
Â
The game will be produced live by SJU-TV and can be viewed on ESPN3, available on the ESPN.com/watch and ESPN app. John Fanta and Glen Crooks will be on the call from Queens.
Â
The St. John's Athletic Department will offer free admission on Thursday night to any individual who makes a contribution to Hurricane Dorian relief efforts in the Bahamas. Fans who bring new or gently used clothing items or shoes to the St. John's Ticket Office at any time prior to kick off will receive complimentary tickets to the match.
Â
The Johnnies will look to snap a three-game skid, their first such streak since 2017, when they welcome Syracuse to Queens. Despite coming out on the losing end of last Sunday's contest with La Salle, the Johnnies matched the Explorers in shot total with 11. In the second half, La Salle held off a furious St. John's push, as the Red Storm recorded an 8-5 second-half shot advantage but proved unable to convert on its opportunities.
Â
Leading the way offensively for the Johnnies is redshirt junior Zsani Kajan, who has recorded two goals for the Red Storm this season, including a game winner at home against Yale. With two tallies on the season, Kajan bumped her career-total to 15 goals for the Red Storm.
Â
Â
St. John's and Syracuse share a series history dating back to 1996, with the Orange holding a 10-7-2 all-time advantage over the Red Storm. The two squads look to break a deadlock in the recent series history, as the Johnnies and the Orange have traded wins in six-straight contests dating back to 2009.
Â
The Red Storm's last win over Syracuse came in 2015, when former St. John's standout Rachel Daly broke a scoreless tie in the 55th minute to secure a 1-0 victory for the Johnnies at SU Soccer Stadium. This match was the opening leg of the New York Challenge Cup that the Red Storm went on to win after defeating Colgate, 1-0, in the final contest at SU Soccer Stadium.
Â
The Orange enter Thursday's contest with a 2-3 record on the season, following three-consecutive setbacks to Dartmouth, Auburn and Kent State. Four different players have found the back of net this season for the Orange, as Taylor Bennett, Sydney Brackett, Shannon Aviza and Laurel Ness have all recorded one goal.
Thursday's contest will be a family affair as freshman Isabelle Aviza, who has scored once on the season for the Red Storm, will square off against her older sister and Syracuse defender Shannon Aviza.
Â
Lysianne Prouix has started in all five games for the Orange this season boasting a 1.00 goals against average while grabbing a total 28 saves.
