Samantha Masur records first career goal in Red Storm victory
Redshirt senior Samantha Masur recorded her first career goal on Thursday night to lift the St. John's women's soccer team to a 1-0 victory over former BIG EAST foe Syracuse at Belson Stadium.
Masur provided the game-winning tally for the Johnnies in the 18th minute off a long pass from Michelle Money. The assist marked the first of Money's young and promising St. John's tenure.
Goalkeeper Naya Lipkens picked up her second win of the season and the first clean sheet of her collegiate career. The redshirt freshman from Bloomfield, Conn., turned aside all three Syracuse tries to lead the Johnnies to their first shout victory of the season.
Lipkens was tested early as the Orange fired off a pair of dangerous shots in the first 16 minutes of play, but the redshirt freshman was up to the task each time as she turned away both Syracuse tries successfully.
The Johnnies settled in and reversed the pressure in the opening half, needing just one look on goal from Masur in the 18th minute to take the lead, 1-0. The sequence began as Money played a long pass into the box toward the left post for Masur. The Johnnies' captain did well to quickly corral the ball before sending her shot to the near side of the net for the game-winning goal.
The Red Storm continued to apply offensive pressure to Syracuse's backline over the remainder of the opening half, outshooting the Orange, 5-1, in the final 23 minutes.
Coming out of the break, Budapest, Hungary, native Zsani Kajan fired a pair of early shots over the first five minutes of the second stanza. The redshirt junior nearly broke through in the 50th minute but her attempt was saved by goalkeeper Lysianne Proulx.
Kajan tallied a team-high three shots on the night, bumping her season total to 15.
The defense continued to step up for the Red Storm throughout the second half as the backline repeatedly turned away scoring opportunities for the Orange. After a pair saves in the first half, Lipkens added one more stop in the second frame to lead the Johnnies to a shutout win.
St. John's will continue its four-game homestand on Sunday afternoon, welcoming Drexel to Belson Stadium. Kick-off is slated for 1 p.m., and will be available to watch on ESPN3.
