St. John’s Travels to Florida for Seminole Invitational

The Red Storm will take on a field of Stony Brook, Florida A&M and Florida State in search of its fifth win of the season
QUEENS, N.Y. (Sept. 12, 2019) – After registering 44 assists in Tuesday's matchup with Hofstra, Erica Di Maulo and the St. John's volleyball team will travel to Tallahassee, Fla., on Friday to face Stony Brook in the opening match of the Home2 Suites Tallahassee Seminole Invitational at 11 a.m.
Following Friday's matchup with Stony Brook, the Red Storm will close out the day against Florida A&M at 4:30 p.m. On Saturday, St. John's will wrap up the tournament with a match against No. 25 Florida State at 12 p.m. All three of the matches will be played inside Tully Gymnasium.
The Johnnies enter the tournament with a 4-4 record, having won four consecutive games against NJIT, Canisius, Columbia and Howard, before falling to Hofstra in five sets on Tuesday.
Di Maulo, who leads the BIG EAST with 260 assists in 2019, registered a team-best 44 helpers against Hofstra. The three-time All-Conference First Team selection also dished out a game-high 35 assists in last Saturday's win over Howard. Di Maulo currently ranks fourth all-time with 4,064 career assists.
Senior libero Amanda Sanabia also notched a career milestone of her own, reaching the 1,500-mark in digs after saving 17 balls on Tuesday against Hofstra. The reigning BIG EAST Libero of the Year ranks fifth in the league with 105 digs this season.
Sophomore middle blocker Ariadni Kathariou paces the conference with 27 blocks in 2019, while junior Maria Angelica Palacios is coming off a game-high 10 blocks against Hofstra. Efrosini Alexakou, Rachele Rastelli and Klara Mikelova have combined for 248 of the Red Storm's 343 kills in 2019.
Stony Brook enters Friday's matchup with a 1-6 overall record, coming off of a 3-2 win over Georgetown last weekend. Reigning America East Setter of the Year LeAnne Sakowicz returns for the Seawolves after posting 1,008 assists, 66 kills and 44 blocks last season. Junior libero Kiani Kerstetter currently leads the squad with 103 digs in 2019, while Sakowicz has dished out 99 assists.
The Red Storm will face the Seawolves for the 18th time in program history, with St. John's holding a 15-2 all-time record against Stony Brook.
After finishing 2018 with just one loss in conference play, Florida A&M enters the tournament posting a 1-7 record in 2019. Despite a slow start to its season, the Rattlers return 2019 Preseason Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference Player of the Year Maria Yvett Garcia.
The 6-foot-1 outside hitter is a three-time All-MEAC selection and ranked second in the conference with 383 kills last season. Garcia has recorded 50 digs, 45 kills and nine blocks for the Rattlers in 2019.
No. 25 Florida State currently holds a 3-2 record, after opening the season with a three-set loss to then-No. 5 Wisconsin. The Seminoles followed that loss with a 3-0 win over then-No. 3 Minnesota.
The squad returns junior middle blocker Taryn Knuth and senior Payton Caffrey, both of whom were named to the 2019 Preseason All-ACC Team. Caffrey currently leads the Seminoles with 56 kills and 60 digs, while Knuth has collected a team-high 27 blocks.
