St. John’s Drops BIG EAST Opener at Providence, 4-0

Red Storm falls in conference debut
PROVIDENCE, R.I. (Sept. 28, 2019) – The St. John's women's soccer team dropped its BIG EAST opener on Saturday night in Providence, falling to the Friars by a score of 4-0 at Chapey Field.
Despite the game's final result, the Johnnies (3-7-0, 0-1-0 BIG EAST) put more shots on net than their counterpart. Six of the Red Storm's eight tries were on target, but Providence keeper Shelby Hogan managed to stop all six. The Friars (6-3-1, 1-0-0 BIG EAST) outshot St. John's, 14-8, overall on the evening.
St. John's registered plenty of chances in the early going, as Alex Madden and Addison Hornsey sent shots on target in the opening six minutes, both of which were saved by Hogan.
Zsani Kajan, a member of this week's BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll, made it three shots on goal in as many tries in the 12th minute, sending a long ball on cage that Hogan jumped and grabbed. Kajan led the Red Storm on the evening with three shots, all of which were on goal.
A few minutes later in the 17th, Hannah McNulty headed an Olivia Lucia cross beyond the reach of Naya Lipkens, giving the Friars and early 1-0 edge.
St. John's continued to fight after falling behind, recording back-to-back corners in the 24th minute to no avail.
The Friars outshot St. John's, 6-1, between their opening goal and the end of the half, including a 44th minute tally from Chloe Ortolano to give Providence a 2-0 cushion at the intermission.
Providence bumped its lead to three just 18 seconds into the latter stanza on a goal from Amber Birchwell before making it 4-0 in the 52nd on Elayna Grillakis marker.
St. John's will return to action on Thursday night, playing host to local rival Seton Hall at 7 p.m.
