The Johnnies will return to action Thursday, as they welcome Syracuse to Belson Stadium
A 42nd minute goal from Maci Bower proved to be the difference maker at Belson Stadium on Sunday afternoon, as La Salle withstood a flurry of late St. John's chances to hold off the Red Storm ,1-0.
Both St. John's (1-5-0) and La Salle (3-2-1) recorded 11 shots on the game, with the Red Storm outshooting the Explorers by an 8-5 margin in the second half. Three of Red Storm's 11 opportunities were on target.
A member of Monday's BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll, Zsani Kajan and teammate Michelle Money each registered a pair of shots for the Red Storm.
Seven other Johnnies picked up a tally on the afternoon, as Alex Madden, Addison Hornsey, Devon Schiller, Isabelle Aviza, Jessica Garziano, Maia Cabrera and Sofia Ambrosio all made an attempt for the Red Storm. Money, Aviza and Garziano each took a shot on goal but were turned aside by the Explorer's keeper.
Naya Lipkens started in goal for St. John's, making three saves on the afternoon.
The Red Storm registered the first shot on goal in the seventh minute, as Garziano put a try on target. However, La Salle's keeper Claudia Jenkins came up with the stop, denying the freshman standout an opportunity to score.
After holding La Salle scoreless through first 42 minutes, the Explorers finally broke through in the closing minutes of the opening stanza with a goal from Bower to move ahead, 1-0.
After trailing in shots, 6-3 in the opening half, the Red Storm tried to create some offensive momentum in the second stanza, outshooting La Salle, 8-5.
Money and Aviza both registered an attempt on goal between the 75th and 78th minutes, but Jenkins came up with the save on both chances.
With the Johnnies' backs against the wall in the closing minutes of play, Cabrera made the Red Storm's final attempt to equalize the match but saw her shot travel just left of the post as La Salle escaped Queens with a 1-0 victory.
The Johnnies will continue their four-game homestand on Thursday night, welcoming Syracuse to Belson Stadium. Kick-off is slated for 6 p.m. and will be available to watch on ESPN3.
