Men’s Tennis Knocks off Wagner, 6-1

The Red Storm starts the spring season with two straight wins for the first time since 2011
QUEENS, N.Y. (Jan. 22, 2020) – The St. John's men's tennis team picked up its second win of the 2020 campaign with a 6-1 decision over Wagner on Wednesday afternoon at Cunningham Park.
The win, which improves St. John's to 2-0 on the year, marks the first time the men's tennis program has started the spring season with back-to-back wins since 2011.
The Red Storm clinched the opening point in doubles play by winning all three matches in comfortable fashion. For the second match in a row, Dylan Loru and Udayan Bhakar opened doubles play with a victory in the No. 3 slot, sweeping Wagner's Abhinav Magow and Mohammed Hussain, 6-0. Giuseppe De Camelis and Ignacio Garcia secured the first point of the afternoon for the Johnnies as they knocked off Wagner's Omar Loutfy and Dylan Walters on the No. 2 court, 6-0. Charlie James and Igor Maslov picked up St. John's third doubles triumph, defeating Wagner's No. 1 duo, 6-1.
The Johnnies took five of six singles matches, all in straight sets, to cruise to the 6-1 win over the Seahawks. De Camelis picked up his second singles victory of his collegiate career with a 6-0, 6-0 sweep on the No. 5 court.
Bhakar, Garcia, Maslov and Loru continued their winning ways with four straight set victories from the No. 3, 1, and 4 positions respectively, pushing the Red Storm to a quick 5-0 lead.
Wagner avoided the sweep with a 6-2, 5-7, 7-10 win in the No. 2 singles slot over St. John's James. Loru secured the sixth and final point of the contest for the Red Storm, sweeping Wagner's Hussain on the No. 6 court, 6-0, 6-0.
St. John's returns to action on Saturday, Jan. 25 when Head Coach Dillon Pottish's squad ventures to West Point, N.Y. for the first of three weekend matches on the campus of Army West Point. The Johnnies will square off with Marist on Saturday at noon, followed by two contests on Sunday against Army and UConn at 1 and 3 p.m., respectively.
