The Red Storm claims its first road victory and improves to 3-0 this season
WEST POINT, N.Y. (Jan. 25, 2020) – The St. John's men's tennis team picked up its first road victory and third win of the spring season on Saturday as Head Coach Dillon Pottish's squad knocked off Marist in West Point, N.Y., 6-1.
Unlike the first two contests against Sacred Heart and Wagner, the Red Storm needed to clinch the doubles play point in comeback fashion. The Red Foxes threatened to claim an early 1-0 lead on the afternoon as they claimed the first doubles triumph in the No. 3 bout. Marist's Piotr Sowinski and Jack Sequerth would go on to defeat Dylan Loru and Giuseppe De Camelis, 6-3.
Charlie James and Igor Maslov picked up St. John's first doubles victory to force a decisive third doubles match, defeating Marist's No. 2 duo Lars Schouten and Nestor Lopez, 6-1. On the No. 1 court, Ognjen Trejgut and Ignacio Garcia secured the first point of the afternoon for the Johnnies as they knocked off Chris Gladden and John Oxner to clinch the doubles point, 6-0.
For the second matchup in a row, the Johnnies took five of six singles matches, all in straight sets, to cruise to the 6-1 win over the Red Foxes. Maslov and Garcia wasted no time in earning their singles victories as the duo swept Augusto Gonzalez and Chris Gladden, 6-0, 6-0, in the No. 5 and 2 slots, respectively.
De Camelis picked up his third singles victory of his collegiate career with a 6-0, 6-2 triumph over John Oxner on the No. 4 court.
In the No. 3 match, Trejgut earned his first singles win of the season as the senior trounced Nestor Lopez in straight sets, 7-5, 6-3.
Udayan Bhakar wrapped up the victory for the Red Storm in his top-flight contest as he defeated Marist's No.1, Lars Schouten, 6-4, 7-6.
Red Foxes avoided the sweep as Piotr Sowinski knocked off St. John's Loru with a 7-5, 6-1 win in the No. 6 singles slot.
"We're off to a great start to the year but we still have some areas to improve on," said Pottish. "We have tough matches with Army and UConn tomorrow but the guys are looking forward to it."
St. John's doubleheader in West Point, N.Y., tomorrow will feature an 11 a.m. contest with Army, followed by UConn at 3 p.m.
