Behind a career-high 20 points and 11 rebounds for senior forward Raven Farley, the St. John's women's basketball team downed Fairleigh Dickinson, 70-44, on Saturday afternoon in the team's season opener at the Rothman Center.
This marked the first double-double of Farley's collegiate career. The Elizabeth, N.J., native converted on eight of her nine attempts from the floor, and 4-of-5 from the charity stripe.
Reigning BIG EAST Sixth Woman of the Year Leilani Correa joined Farley in double figures with 16 points and five boards to kick start the 2020-21 campaign.
Kadaja Bailey stuffed the stat sheet for St. John's, finishing just shy of double figures with eight points, seven rebounds and a team-high six assists.
As a team, St. John's dominated the battle of the boards, outrebounding FDU by a 47-30 margin.
The Knights jumped out to an early 6-1 lead. However, Farley responded with back-to-back layups, igniting a 15-0 run for the Johnnies, to give them a 16-6 edge with a little over three minutes remaining in the first frame.
FDU controlled the momentum over the next 40 seconds, pulling the score within five, 18-13, with over a minute to play. The Johnnies were not about to lose sight of the lead, and with the clock winding down, Emma Nolan used a buzzer-beating trey to grow the Red Storm's lead to eight, 21-13, after 10 minutes of action.
The two programs traded blows to open the second stanza before the home team used an 8-0 run to inch back within one, 25-24. That was as close as the Knights would get as St. John's rattled off six unanswered points to take a double digit lead, 34-24, at the intermission. Camree Clegg put the exclamation mark on the half for St. John's, closing out the Red Storm's run with mid-court buzzer beater.
After opening the final frame with back-and-forth buckets, the trio of Farley, Correa and Bailey combined for a 12-0 run to give St. John's a 22-point advantage, 48-26, with just under four minutes to play in the quarter. FDU tacked on four more points over the last 3:45 before Fapou Semebene converted on a layup, sending the Johnnies into the final stretch with a 20-point advantage, 50-30.
Putting the game to bed over the last 10 minutes of play, St. John's outscored FDU, 20-14, sealing a 70-44 victory.
