The Johnnies drops its first BIG EAST contest of the season, fall to 4-3 on the year
QUEENS, N.Y. (Feb. 14, 2020) – After sealing last weekend's slate of matches with a doubleheader sweep over Siena and Wagner last Sunday, the St. John's women's tennis team fell in its first BIG EAST bout of the season in a tight 4-3 contest against Villanova at the USTA National Tennis Center.
The Red Storm clinched the first point of the afternoon with two doubles wins on the No. 2 and 3 courts. Oceane Garibal and Najah Dawson knocked off Lexi DeNucci and Kaylan Rotman in the No. 2 slot, 6-2. St. John's claimed the second doubles triumph on the No. 3 court as Kajsa Stegrell and Gabriela Tenorio topped Olivia Kapp and Carina Burdick, 6-3.
In singles play, The Johnnies took an early 3-0 lead, securing the first two singles victories in the No. 4 and 1 contests. Dawson and Jessica Livianu bounced Kaylan Rotman and Lindsey Zimmerman in straight sets, 6-1, 6-1, and 6-4, 7-5, respectively.
The Johnnies faltered down the stretch as Villanova would secure the next four matches and clinch a 4-3 win on the road. The Wildcats would capture all four of their singles victories in straight sets in the No. 2, 3, 5, and 6 slots as St. John's Milka Genkova, Garibal, and Camila Ordonez, and Willa Bay Breunich lost to Claudia Althans, Lexi DeNucci, Carina Burdick, and Caitlin Fisher, respectively.
