QUEENS, N.Y. (Feb. 13, 2020) – After capping off last weekend's slate of matches with a doubleheader sweep over Siena and Wagner on Sunday at the Queens College Tennis Center, the St. John's women's tennis team is back in action this weekend with contests against BIG EAST rival Villanova and UMass.
The two victories on Sunday improved the Johnnies to a 4-2 start to their spring season. In the two matches against Siena and Wagner Sunday evening, St John's went unbeaten in doubles play, winning five of the six matches. The Red Storm as a team finished 7-2 in singles play, including multiple wins from three of Head Coach Lauren Leo's players.
Jessica Livianu, this week's BIG EAST Tennis Athlete of the Week, had a phenomenal week on the tennis court, as she finished with a perfect 3-0 singles record in the No. 1 slot. In Sunday's doubleheader against Siena and Wagner, the senior defeated Siena's Meagan Brown, 6-2, 6-2, and Wagner's Vendika Anand, 6-1, 6-0, to improve to 6-0 on the year.
Livianu also finished 3-0 in doubles play with Milka Genkova as her partner, relinquishing only two points the entire weekend. On Friday, the senior duo knocked off Syracuse's No. 1 group Zeynep Erman and Kim Hansen, 6-1. Livianu and Genkova capped the three-match weekend with two dominant victories against the Saints and Seahawks, bouncing Siena's Meagan Brown and Maanya Viswanath, 6-1, and Wagner's Vendika Anand and Samantha Lugtu, 6-0.
St. John's will compete in its first conference tilt of the season Friday afternoon when it welcomes Villanova at the USTA National Tennis Center. Coach Leo's squad has won each of the last 12 matchups between the two programs, dating back to the 2004 season. In those 12 contests, the Red Storm has only relinquished eight matches and seven of its twelve wins have ended in a 7-0 sweep.
Villanova (2-1) is coming off a 6-1 win on the road at Lehigh last Saturday. Sophomore Lindsay Zimmermann made her Villanova debut in the No. 1 singles and doubles spot. She won her singles match in straight sets, 7-5, 6-4.
Following Friday's contest with the Wildcats, the Johnnies travel north to Amherst, Mass., to square off with UMass on Sunday. The Red Storm can capture its first win over the Minutewomen in three years with a win at the Mullins Tennis Courts. UMass claimed 4-3 victories in each of the last two meetings against the Red Storm.
UMass (3-5) has lost its last four bouts heading into the weekend, falling 4-0 to four IVY League opponents (Harvard, Yale, Dartmouth, and Cornell). Five Minutewomen have secured three victories in the spring dual season, including Anna Nappadiy, who is the 3-2 in matches in the No. 1 singles slot this season.
After this weekend, the Red Storm will host NJIT at the USTA National Tennis Center on Friday, Feb. 21, at noon ET. The Johnnies wrap up their weekend on Sunday, Feb. 23, as they square off with Brown in Providence, R.I., at 3 p.m. ET.
