The Red Storm clinch the first four singles matches after dropping the doubles point to secure the victory
AMHERST, Mass. (Feb. 16, 2020) – After falling in its first BIG EAST bout of the season in a tight 4-3 contest against Villanova on Friday, the St. John's women's tennis team responded with a crucial 5–2 road victory on Sunday against UMass at the Bay Road Tennis Club.
The Red Storm missed out on claiming the doubles point, losing bouts on the No. 1 and 3 courts. Jovana Bogicevic and Jasmin Tripathy wasted no time in their No. 3 bout, defeating Kajsa Stegrell and Gabriela Tenorio, 6-0. UMass secured the first point of the afternoon in the No. 1 tilt, knocking off Jessica Livianu and Milka Genkova, 6-2.
In last season's matchup between these two programs, the Johnnies led 3-1 before the UMass racked up consecutive wins at No. 2, No. 3 and No. 5 singles for the come-from-behind triumph. This time around, Head Coach Lauren Leo's squad wouldn't allow that to happen as her team fired back in singles play to claim the first four contests and clinch the win over the Minutewomen.
Genkova earned the Red Storm's first singles victory in the No. 3 tilt, defeating UMass' Ashley Avery, 6-2, 6-1. Oceane Garibal, Livianu, and Najah Dawson each sealed straight-set wins in the No. 1, 2, and 4 matches defeating Martina Bocchi (6-0, 6-3), Anna Napadiy (6-4, 6-2), and Jovana Bogicevic (6-2, 6-2), respectively.
Camila Ordonez claimed the team's fifth and final point of the contest in the No. 6 tilt, bouncing Sarah Mezini in three sets, 3-6, 6-4, 10-6.
The Minutewomen's lone singles triumph of the afternoon came in a three-set duel on the No. 5 court as Jasmin Tripathy def. Tenorio, 6-4, 4-6, 10-7.
The Red Storm will host NJIT at the USTA National Tennis Center on Friday, Feb. 21, at noon ET. The Johnnies wrap up their weekend on Sunday, Feb. 23, as they square off with Brown in Providence, R.I., at 3 p.m. ET.
