Red Storm sweeps Binghamton, falls to Lamar
COLLEGE STATION, Texas (Feb. 15, 2020) – The St. John's softball team split its second day at the Texas A&M Invitational, defeating Binghamton after falling to Lamar on Saturday at Davis Diamond.
Game 1
The Johnnies fell to Lamar, 10-2, in five innings.
The Red Storm (2-7) jumped out to an early 2-0 lead, capitalizing on a fielding miscue by the Lamar shortstop on a steal to bring Elyse Morris home. With two outs and runners on first and second, Laura Delgado knocked an RBI single to the left side, bringing Peyton Cody around to score and giving the Johnnies a two-run lead.
Lamar (3-6) tagged St. John's with nine unanswered runs through the opening three innings to take a 9-2 advantage.
Both teams were held off the scoreboard in the fourth inning before Lamar ended the game in the fifth on a solo home run, 10-2.
Game 2
St. John's swept Binghamton (0-4) this weekend following its 5-2 victory on Saturday after a dominant display in the circle from Angela Saric and a successful offensive outing from Kaitlyn Lologo.
Saric registered her first win and complete game of 2020 with a 109-pitch performance against the Bears. The Oakland, N.J., native allowed just one earned run on five hits while striking out one batter.
Lologo put forth a 1-for-2 showing at the dish with a walk, a hit by pitch, and a pair of runs scored in the Johnnies' victory.
Kalei Sorensen had a career day at the plate with the first multi-hit performance in her tenure with the Red Storm. The Valencia, Calif., native went 2-for-3 at the dish with an RBI in Saturday's affair.
Lologo walked, stole a base and advanced to third on a passed ball to start the game before Kaitlin Mattera was hit by a pitch for the 18th time in her career. In the next at-bat, Delgado drove a hard grounder towards the second base hole to bring Lologo around to score for a Johnnies' 1-0 lead. After Gretchen Bowie worked a two-out walk to load the bases, Sorensen drew a base on balls of her own to force in the Red Storm's second run of the inning, 2-0.
Both teams exchanged scoreless second and third frames despite the Red Storm threatening with runners in scoring position on both occasions. Saric allowed just two hits through the first three innings.
In the top of the fourth, Morris and Lologo helped St. John's to a second and third, no outs situation after heads up baserunning by the duo. In the following at-bat, Amelia Ditolvo drove a single into center field, bringing Morris home and extending the Johnnies' advantage to three, 3-0. The Red Storm tacked on two more runs when Lologo scored on a wild pitch and Cody hit a sacrifice fly to right-center, driving Ditolvo in from third and lifting the team to a 5-0 tilt.
Following a scoreless half inning from both teams, Binghamton tagged the Red Storm with a two-spot to cut its deficit to three, 5-2, in the bottom of the fifth.
St. John's put at least one runner on base in each of the final two innings before Saric closed the game out in the seventh and helped the Red Storm notch its second win of the season.
The Johnnies will close out the Texas A&M Invitational on Sunday with a matchup against the host Aggies at noon ET.
