The Johnnies are in search of their first win in 2020
QUEENS, N.Y. (Feb. 13, 2020) – Following a rough start to its 2020 campaign, the St. John's softball team will look to bounce back in College Station at the Texas A&M Invitational on Feb. 14-16.
The Johnnies will open play on Friday at 11:00 a.m. ET, against Binghamton, who kicks off its 2020 slate, followed by a showdown with the host Aggies at 6:15 p.m.
On Saturday, St. John's will take on Lamar at 11:00 a.m. ET, and Binghamton at 6:15 p.m., before closing out the weekend with its second contest against Texas A&M on Sunday at 12:15 p.m.
St. John's (0-5) will face Lamar (1-4) and Texas A&M (3-2) for the first time in program history. The Johnnies hold a 4-3 record over Binghamton in a state rivalry dating back to 2002.
Against the Bears in 2018, the Red Storm downed the visiting team, 8-4, at Red Storm Field in the highest scoring game between the two teams. Gretchen Bowie went 2-for-4 with four RBIs, including a two-run shot in the top of the first. Jessi Bryant shined with a perfect 2-for-2 performance and a run scored. Kaitlin Mattera also drove in a run in the 2018 meeting. St. John's and Binghamton are tied, 29-29, in scoring across all seven games, averaging 4.1 runs per game.
Mattera was a steady force at the dish for St. John's at the UCF Black & Gold Tournament, registering a .438 batting along with seven hits, which ranks fifth in the conference.
The Coventry, R.I., native is off to the best start of her career, registering more hits in the first five games of 2020 than any other season, surpassing the six base knocks she recorded in her freshman year. Mattera also posted a pair of multi-hit games to kick off her Red Storm career before going on to capture her first selection to the All-BIG EAST First Team.
Fellow Rhode Islander Gabriella Conca shined on the final day of the Orlando trip, registering a .500 batting average in the final two games against Clemson and UCF. Against the Tigers, the Cranston native went 2-for-4 with a career-high four RBIs, three of which came off the first home run of her tenure with the Red Storm.
Conca was one of just two Johnnies during opening weekend to take a pitcher deep, joining Bowie on the home run leaderboard. She also reached base twice in the tournament finale against UCF, going 1-for-2 with a walk while recording two of her team-leading four runs scored.
Binghamton enters its first slate of games in 2020 at the Texas A&M Invitational after a 19-29 record last season.
The Bears will be led by ECAC Second-Team All-Stars sophomore Marissa Braito and junior Sarah Benn. The tandem combined for 85 hits, 34 RBIs and 50 runs scored in 2019. In the circle, Chelsea Howard and Rayn Gibson will front the load for Binghamton after winning 10 games and striking out 151 batters combined last year.
Texas A&M is coming off of a 3-2 weekend at the Aggie Classic, sweeping Abilene Christian by a combined score of 17-7 and falling to UT Arlington in two of three contests.
Jourdyn Campbell and Meagan Smith led the Aggies with 13 of the team's 25 RBIs along with four of the nine home runs. Four Texas A&M pitchers have an ERA under 2.00, allowing a combined 11 earned runs in 36.0 innings. Kayla Poynter leads the Aggies with 20 strikeouts in 9.2 frames.
Lamar struggled in the early portion of the Texas Classic last weekend, allowing a combined 31 runs in its first two games against Wichita State and No. 6/6 Texas.
The Cardinals put a tally in the win column after downing Maryland, 7-6, with a two-run homer from Mackenzie Futrell. Teams are batting .386 against Lamar's four pitchers while the Cardinals' lineup is hitting .184 against the opposition.
