St. John’s Earns Fifth-Straight Victory, Topples Penn, 4-3

The Red Storm claim four singles matches to complete the comeback; improve to 13-2 on the year
PHILADELPHIA (Feb. 28, 2020) - The St. John's men's tennis team won its fifth consecutive match on Friday, sealing a 4-3 come-from-behind victory over Penn at the Hamlin/Hecht Tennis Center.
The Johnnies claimed its first win over the Quakers since April 15, 2015, and fifth in the series history.
The Quakers earned wins in the No. 1 and 2 doubles matches to claim an early 1-0 lead over the Red Storm. Ignacio Garcia and Charlie James fell in the No. 1 bout to Penn's Kevin Zhu and Dmitry Shatalin, 6-1. The Quakers No. 2 duo of Edoardo Graziani and Jason Hildebrandt clinched the doubles point with a 6-2 win over Louis-nils Michel and Djuro Opacic.
In singles play, Opacic secured the Johnnies' first point of the afternoon with a 6-2, 6-2 triumph over Penn's Max Cancilla in the No. 4 slot.
The Quakers would go on to win the next two singles tilts on the No. 5 and 1 courts. Harsh Parikh toppled Michel in the No. 5 contest 7-6, 6-3, while No. 57 Aditya Vashistha dropped his first singles match of the season, falling to Edoardo Graziani in straight sets 6-4, 6-3.
St. John's needed wins in the final three matches to seal the come-from-behind victory over the Quakers. Garcia started earned a crucial three-set victory in the No. 2 bout to launch the comeback push.
Udayan Bhakar leveled the contest at three points apiece with a three-set victory, despite losing the opening frame, 0-6. The sophomore from Bikaner, India, earned his team a chance to claim the win in the deciding match on the No. 6 court.
The Johnnies sealed the 4-3 triumph behind a Charlie James three-set win over Penn's Jonah Jurick, 6-7, 6-4, 6-2.
St. John's will take an extended break for three weeks, returning to the court on Sunday, March 22, to face Quinnipiac in Hamden, Conn., at 1 p.m.
