Red Storm halted the Spartans’ program-record with a 3-2 victory
SAN DIEGO, Calif. (Feb. 29, 2020) – The St. John's softball team snapped San Jose State's 17-game winning streak on Saturday in the squad's split on day two of the San Diego Classic.
Game 1
The Red Storm stunned the Spartans, 3-2, to halt the program's all-time longest winning streak.
San Jose State lost its first two games of the season only to rattle off 17 consecutive wins, the longest in the nation, before falling to the Red Storm.
Senior Laura Delgado shined in the morning affair, putting forth a 2-for-3 performance with a pair of RBIs. Fellow classmate Kaitlin Mattera also registered a pair of hits against the Spartans and tallied the game-tying run for the Johnnies.
In just her fourth start of the season, sophomore Angela Saric picked up her second complete game victory. In her seven innings of work, the Oakland, N.J., native allowed just two runs on four hits and struck out three batters.
St. John's (6-13) and San Jose State (18-3) exchanged a trio of blank innings that featured just a combined three baserunners for both squads. Saric retired nine of her first 11 batters faced.
The Spartans struck first, putting a pair on the board in the top of the fourth on a two-run home run.
San Jose State's lead was short lived as the Johnnies stormed back to knot the game at two in the bottom half of the inning. With one out, junior Kalei Sorensen laced a solo homer over the left-center wall to cut the Red Storm's deficit to one, 2-1. Two batters later, Mattera ripped a single to right field before coming around to score on a Delgado double to right-center and knotting the game at two.
Following a scoreless fifth inning and top of the sixth, St. John's found its way onto the scoreboard in the bottom half. After Mattera lined her second single of the morning through the right side, she was pinch run for by Meisha Murray. The speedy sophomore swiped second and moved to third on an error by the shortstop on the throw. With no outs, Delgado delivered again, dropping a single in behind second base and bringing Murray around to score and lifting the Johnnies to a one-run advantage, 3-2.
The Spartans did not go down quietly as the visiting team put a runner on third with one out in the final frame. However, Saric settled in and registered a strikeout and a groundout to end the game, securing her second win of the season.
Game 2
The Red Storm fell to San Diego State, 8-0, in five innings.
Elyse Morris registered the team's only hit in the contest, beating out a bunt single in the second frame.
The Aztecs (13-7) registered three runs in the first inning, putting the Red Storm in a 3-0 hole.
Following a scoreless second frame, San Diego State scored two in the third and three in the fourth to go up 8-0 before run ruling the Johnnies in five innings.
St. John's will conclude the San Diego Classic tomorrow at noon ET/9 a.m. PT against Mount St. Mary's at the University of San Diego.
