St. John’s Concludes Day One of BIG EAST Indoor Championships

The Red Storm sits in sixth place heading into Monday
GENEVA, Ohio (March 1, 2020) – The St. John's track & field team had a strong showing on the first day of the BIG EAST Indoor Championships at the SPIRE Institute on Sunday.
Leah Anderson captured first place in the 400-meter dash preliminaries after recording a mark of 54.23. The junior sprinter also led the field in the 200 meters with a time of 23.81. Anderson will participate in the finals for both events tomorrow afternoon.
Avon Samuels grabbed a fourth-place finish in the 400 meters with a mark of 55.39 before finishing the 200 meters in third with a time of 24.37. Destiny Davis will join Samuels and Anderson in the 200-meter finals after registering a mark of 24.89, good enough for sixth place overall. Skyy Diop also closed out the 400 meters in sixth place with a time of 56.35 and is one of three Johnnies to receive a qualifying mark in the event.
Junior Onassha Rogers will represent St. John's in tomorrow's 60-meter dash finals after placing sixth overall in the preliminaries with a time of 7.71.
Amarys Berry took fifth place in the weight throw with a distance of 16.98 meters. Bernadette McGowan and Samantha Morillo finished the event in sixth and seventh place, respectively.
Amanda Belgrave also placed sixth in the long jump finals, recording a mark of 5.30 meters.
Junior Gabriella Kelly set a new personal record in the pole vault after clearing a height of 3.05 meters while Antonia Frazier set a personal record of her own in the shot put section of the pentathlon with a distance of 12.29 meters.
St. John's begins the final day of the BIG EAST Indoor Championships on Monday at 10 a.m.
