St. John’s Finishes in Fourth at the BIG EAST Indoor Championships

Leah Anderson was named the BIG EAST Women’s Most Outstanding Track Performer
GENEVA, Ohio (March 2, 2020) – The St. John's track & field team earned three gold medals and six podium spots at the BIG EAST Indoor Championships on Monday.
The Red Storm racked up a total of 98 points en route to a fourth-place finish.
Leah Anderson was named the BIG EAST Women's Most Outstanding Performer in track events and the Women's High Point Performer of the meet after taking home two gold medals in the 200 and 400-meter dashes. The junior sprinter recorded a time of 53.76 in the 400 meters before grabbing first place in the 200 meters with a mark of 23.63.
St. John's 4x400-meter relay squad of Anderson, Avon Samuels, Brianna Burkley and Skyy Diop were also crowned BIG EAST champions, registering a time of 3:40.45. This marks the fourth straight meet that the team has earned a first-place finish in the event.
"I thought our team competed very well across the board," Head Coach Jim Hurt said. "We scored in every event and Leah Anderson was her normal, fantastic self. We had one more point to get on the podium, but I'm very pleased with our overall effort."
Thrower Amarys Berry captured a silver medal in the shot put after posting a distance of 14.76 meters. Sophomore Samantha Morillo joined her teammate on the podium, picking up a bronze medal with a personal-best mark of 14.30 meters.
Onassha Rogers earned a podium spot in the 60-meter dash after finishing in third place with a time of 7.68.
Eleftheria Christogeorgou also took fourth place in the high jump after clearing a mark of 1.60 meters while the 4x800-meter relay team of Claire Cushing, Chantai Smith, Katherine Bruno and Stephanie Gerland put together their best performance of the season with a time of 9:34.11
The Red Storm returns to action this Friday when the team travels to Boston, Mass., for the ECAC Championships at the Boston University Track & Field Center.
