St. John’s Mourns the Loss of Legendary Swim Coach Richard Krempecki

Krempecki served as the head coach of the Red Storm men and women’s swim team for 21 years
QUEENS, N.Y. (March 8, 2020) – The St. John's athletics department mourns the loss of legendary swim coach Richard Krempecki, who passed away on Wednesday, March 4.
Krempecki, who started the Red Storm men and women's swim program in 1961, coached the team for 24 years from 1961-85. During that time, Krempecki won 10 straight Metropolitan Collegiate Swimming Championships while producing 10 All-Americans and five NCAA qualifiers.
A 1995 inductee into the St. John's Athletics Hall of Fame, Krempecki holds a 199-78 all-time record for a .718 win percentage. He was also the Assistant Vice President for Student Athletics in Academic Support and served as the president of the Metropolitan Swimming Conference from 1965-68. Krempecki was inducted into the Metropolitan Swimming Hall of Fame in 2004.
Krempecki also received the College Swimming Coaches of America's Master Coach Award in 1970 for demonstrating excellence in coaching and making notable contributions to the growth of intercollegiate swimming.
A Trenton, N.J., native, Krempecki is survived by his two sons, Thomas and Richard; and his three grandchildren, Katelyn, Sara and Kyle.
A memorial service will be held on Friday, March 13, 2020 at 11:00 a.m., at the St. Bridget of Ireland Church in Stamford, Conn.
