Leilani Correa leads the Red Storm with double-double performance
Behind a double-double effort from Leilani Correa, the no. 3 seed St. John's moved past sixth-seeded Creighton with a convincing 70-54 victory in the quarterfinal round of the 2020 BIG EAST Women's Basketball Tournament on Saturday night.
With the win over the Bluejays, St. John's (19-11, 11-17 BIG EAST) will make its fifth trip in seven seasons to the conference semifinals.
After trailing the Bluejays, 20-5, following the first 10 minutes of action, the Red Storm went off on an offensive tear. The Johnnies outscored Creighton, 65-34, over the final 30 minutes of action to take the three-game season sweep.
Correa, who received her Sixth-Woman award during a pregame ceremony, recorded her second career double-double with 27 points and 11 rebounds. The rookie guard, who was also a unanimous selection to the league's All-Freshman Team, converted on 11 of her 23 attempts from the floor, including a 3-for-6 showing from long distance.
Alisha Kebbe finished just shy of a double-double with 13 points and nine boards. The senior guard was dead accurate from the charity stripe, knocking down all eight of her attempts.
Tiana England stuffed the stat sheet for St. John's, finishing with 11 points, six rebounds and five assists. In the opening minutes of action, England picked up the 500th assist of her Red Storm career on her first dime of the night. The Stamford, Conn., native is now the sixth Johnnie in program history to reach that milestone.
St. John's won the turnover battle convincingly, forcing 18 Creighton (19-11, 11-7 BIG EAST) miscues while surrendering just 11 of its own. Nine of Creighton's 18 turnovers were caused by Red Storm steals.
The Bluejays controlled the momentum early, outscoring the Red Storm, 10-3, to take a seven-point lead at the first media timeout. Creighton continued to outplay the Johnnies down the stretch of the opening frame, firing off a 10-2 run over the final four minutes to hold a 15-point advantage, 20-5, at the end of the first period.
The Johnnies found their groove in the second stanza, firing off a 12-3 run to pull the contest within six, 23-17, midway through the second quarter. Correa fueled the Red Storm's offensive surge, accounting for seven of the Johnnies' 12 points.
The two teams traded buckets over the next few minutes, before the Johnnies took off on a 9-3 run down the stretch, knotting the score at 30 at the intermission.
