Guzzi and Roche rank among top freshmen nationwide
QUEENS, N.Y. (Sept. 24, 2020) – Looking to capture its league record 10th BIG EAST title this spring, the St. John's baseball program was well represented in the latest player rankings released this week by Perfect Game.
Â
On Tuesday, the website unveiled its list of the nation's top 500 freshmen and a pair of Red Storm right-handers found themselves among the top 300, as Nick Guzzi checked in at no. 269 and Tyler Roche followed closely at no. 278.Â
Â
On Wednesday, Perfect Game released a ranking of the nation's freshmen by conference with Guzzi and Roche pacing the BIG EAST at first and second, respectively. Four more of their St. John's teammates found themselves included in this group of potential impact freshmen, as Brandon Castellini ranked 12th, Chris Conniff and Chuck Sanzio went back-to-back at no. 14 and no. 15 and Ben Adams rounded out the group at no. 23.
Â
This group of talented newcomers will look to compliment a core of returning talent for the Red Storm, including a trio of local products that were named 2020 Collegiate Baseball Freshman All-Americans in Sonny Fauci, David Glancy and Jake Lazzaro.Â
Â
In total, St. John's returns six starters at field positions from the shortened 2020 season and welcomes back every pitcher who made a start for the Johnnies during the abbreviated campaign.
Â
St. John's holds BIG EAST records for tournament and regular season titles with nine apiece while ranking in the top 10 in Division I history with 37 NCAA Regional appearances. Since 2004, the Johnnies have been to the NCAA Tournament 10 times in 16 opportunities, including a berth in the 2012 Super Regional round.
