Red Storm Men’s and Women’s Basketball Teams take part in virtual Dribble for the Cure to support Pediatric Cancer Research Foundation
The St. John's men's and women's basketball programs hosted the first ever virtual Dribble for the Cure on Saturday to help bring awareness to the Pediatric Cancer Research Foundation (PCRF).
The 10th installment of the event has generated more than $41,000 with donations still being accepted.
Dating back to the inaugural event in 2011, Dribble for the Cure at St. John's has raised approximately $800,000 to support the work of Dr. Mitchell Cairo, chief of pediatric hematology, oncology and stem cell transplantation at Maria Fareri Children's Hospital in Westchester.
"This is a very important event for PCRF," Dr. Cairo said. "Pediatric Cancer Research is at the pinnacle of its long 60-year history and there is still a long way to go. There are still children who don't make it and there are also children who suffer a lot of toxicities. Our program is focused on a number of cellular immunotherapy approaches, and also focusing on how we can reduce both acute and late effects."
Due to the ongoing effects of the COVID-19 pandemic, the charitable event took place through the PCRF Dribble App powered by MoveSpring. The new format featured a five-day activity challenge that offered live streaming content and unlockable milestones, as well as special messages from teams, coaches and sponsors throughout the event.
The entire men's and women's basketball programs participated in the event this past weekend. In addition, St. John's head coaches Mike Anderson and Joe Tartamella offered some words on behalf of the athletic department.
"Dribble for the Cure is a tremendous event, that means so much to our basketball program because of the impact it has had, raising awareness and funding for pediatric cancer," Anderson said. "It's so great to be a part of the 10th annual event at St. John's and to learn all about the progress Dr. Cairo and his team have made to help increase survival rates."
"To be able to help pediatric cancer and the fight for children with this terrible disease, to watch survivors, those who have had it and are still fighting it, to watch them smile is truly an honor to be a part of," Tartamella said. "It has been a tremendous partnership. To really see those who battle this terrible disease day in and day out, they are the true fighters; they are our heroes."
The Pediatric Cancer Research Foundation is an independent, nonprofit organization, wholly dedicated to funding leading-edge pediatric cancer research nationwide. For more information, please visit www.PCRF-kids.org.
