Correa eclipsed the 30-point mark for the third time this season
Led by a game-high 35 points from Leilani Correa, the St. John's women's basketball team defeated Georgetown, 70-53, at McDonough Arena on Wednesday afternoon.
Correa, whose 35 points matched a career high set earlier this season against Delaware, converted on 11 of her 22 attempts from the floor, while knocking down 10 of her 12 tries from the free-throw line. The sophomore guard from Manchester, N.J. has reached the 30-point mark three times this season and six times over her Red Storm career.
Junior guard Kadaja Bailey notched her second double-double in as many games. The Long Beach, N.Y., native finished with 14 points on 5-of-10 shooting from the floor and matched her career-best 14 rebounds set last time out against Villanova.
Junior forward Rayven Peeples finished second on the team in rebounding, pulling down 10 boards against the Hoyas.
Unique Drake, who was coming off a career-best 21 points at Villanova on Monday night, finished just shy of double figures with nine points. The sophomore guard also dished out three assists and snatched two steals.
After a little over a minute of scoreless action for both programs, the Red Storm (5-9, 2-7 BIG EAST) broke through first, as Correa converted at the rim. The Johnnies and Hoyas (1-6, 1-6 BIG EAST) traded blows over the next 2:28 before the Johnnies unleashed an 8-0 run to take a five-point lead, 12-7, with two and a half minutes remaining in the first quarter.
The Hoyas responded with a run of their own, firing off 11 unanswered points to lead, 18-12, after 10 minutes of action.
Correa drained a shot from deep to open up the second period. The triple ignited a personal 12-0 run for the sophomore guard, as the Johnnies regained the lead, 24-18, midway through the second stanza.
With 3:28 remaining in the half, the Hoyas managed to get back within one, 24-23, before the Red Storm uncorked a 11-2 run down the stretch to take a double-digit lead, 35-25, at the intermission.
Through the first two quarters, Correa led the way for the Red Storm offensively, registering 22 points on 7-of-15 shooting from the floor. The Manchester, N.J. native also converted on five of her seven attempts from the free-throw line.
Georgetown took off on a 13-4 run to open up the third quarter, trimming their deficit down to one, 39-38. That was as close as the Hoyas would get, as St. John's fired off a 12-1 run to lead by 12, 51-39, after 30 minutes of action.
The Red Storm carried its third-quarter momentum over into the final frame, rattling off 12 unanswered points to balloon its lead to 24, 63-39, with 6:53 on the clock. Georgetown used a 7-0 run to pull the score within 17, 63-46, before the Johnnies locked in the victory.
The Red Storm will return to action on Wednesday, Feb. 3, when the team travels to Storrs, Conn., for the first time since 2012, as Connecticut spent the last seven seasons in the American Athletic Conference before rejoining the BIG EAST this summer. The Johnnies and the Huskies are slated to tip off at 6:30 p.m. on SNY.
