St. John’s Falls to No. RV/24 Georgetown, 1-0, on Sunday

Vicari recorded the game-winning goal in the 53rd minute
Facing off against reigning BIG EAST champs, the St. John's women's soccer team saw No. RV/24 Georgetown convert on a second-half goal to come away with a 1-0 victory on Sunday at Belson Stadium.
Gia Vicari scored the lone goal of the match, her eighth of the year, for Georgetown (8-0-6, 4-0-2 BIG EAST) less than 10 minutes into the second stanza.
Five different Johnnies registered shots in Sunday's contest, as Zsani Kajan, Grace Bernardi, Shannon Aviza, Frederique St.-Jean and Angelina Scoma all picked up a tally on the afternoon.
Despite picking up the loss, Naya Lipkens, who ranked second in the conference for save percentage entering the match, recorded two stops for St. John's. Gina Muzi, a product of Delafield, Wis., made her Red Storm debut between the pipes.
St. John's (6-4-2, 2-2-1 BIG EAST) first opportunity of the opening half came in the ninth minute, as Kajan send a right-footed strike towards the left corner of the cage but it was tipped by Georgetown's goalkeeper, Allie Augur.
The Johnnies continued to apply pressure, as Bernardi nearly gave the Red Storm a one-goal lead in the 32nd minute. The Massapequa, N.Y., native sent a long shot to the left corner of the cage from just outside the 18-yard box, forcing Augur to make a diving save.
The two programs entered the half in a scoreless deadlock, registering three shots apiece.
Coming out of the intermission, Georgetown broke through in the 53rd minute to put the Hoyas up, 1-0. The play began on the visiting team's ninth corner kick of the afternoon, as Maya Fernandez-Powell sent a strike into the box. St. John's sophomore Ava Collins attempted to clear it out, but Vicari quickly corralled the rebound before sending it past Lipkens to put the Hoyas on top.
Georgetown nearly extended its lead to two in 72nd minute, but Lipkens came up with a huge play for the Johnnies, tipping the ball over the net to keep the score at bay.
In the 80th minute, with the Johnnies in search of the equalizer, St.-Jean sent a towering attempt toward the cage but it sailed over the woodwork, as the Hoyas came away victorious.
St. John's returns to action on Thursday, when the Johnnies travel to Marquette. The Red Storm and the Golden Eagles will kick off at 8 p.m. ET on the BIG EAST Digital Network (BEDN).
