Eight Johnnies to take the court in Philadelphia
Eight members of the St. John's men's tennis team will take the court at the Intercollegiate Tennis Association's Northeast Regionals this week.
Axel Vila Antuna, Udayan Bhakar and Ignacio Garcia have all qualified into the 128-man main draw, which is set to begin on Friday at the University of Pennsylvania.
The trio along with freshman Yaron Guberman are fresh off the ITA All-American Championships in Tulsa, Okla. St. John's recorded three total wins against top collegiate talent at the event. Bhakar posted the team's best finish with two wins before falling in the pre-qualifying draw's Round of 64 to Liberty's Josh Wilson.
Giuseppe De Camelis, Carl Gustafsson, Evan Felcher, Charlie James and Guberman will participate in the 64-player singles qualifying draw on Thursday. The top finishers will then funnel into the main singles bracket.
Three pairs of Red Storm student-athletes have been entered into the 64-team doubles tournament. James and Guberman, Garcia and Vila Antuna and Gustafsson and De Camelis will take on the top players in the Northeast region.
The event will span five days as over 30 Division I schools from Connecticut, Massachusetts, New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania and Rhode Island will face-off at the Hamlin and Hecht Tennis Centers. The top two finishers in singles and doubles will earn an invitation to the ITA's Fall National Championships to be held Nov. 4-7 in San Diego.
The Johnnies are set to return to Hamlin and Hecht Tennis Centers for the second time this fall. The Red Storm opened its 2021-22 campaign at the Penn Invite back on Sept. 17. Vila Antuna led the charge with a 3-0 record in his singles matches. Gustafsson, Garcia, De Camelis and James all tallied multiple victories in the City of Brotherly Love last month.
