Maia Cabrera scores game-winning goal in the 44th minute
The St. John's women's soccer team kicked off its two-game road swing with a 1-0 win over Seton Hall on Thursday evening at Owen T. Carroll Field.
Senior Maia Cabrera provided the offense for the Johnnies on the night, recording the game-winning tally in the 44th minute. This marked Cabrera's second goal of the season and the fifth of her Red Storm career. Junior Angelina Scoma registered the first assist of her collegiate career on Cabrera's game-winning tally.
Redshirt junior Naya Lipkens picked her seventh clean sheet of the campaign, stopping a trio of Seton Hall (6-10, 1-7 BIG EAST) shots.
Jessica Garziano and Zsani Kajan posted a number of quality scoring chances for the Red Storm, as the duo unleashed a combined 13 shots on the evening, including five on target. Kayla Mesaros also recorded a strike on night.
Shots were 15-7 in favor of the Red Storm (8-5-2, 4-3-1 BIG EAST), including a 6-3 advantage in attempts on goal.
St. John's controlled the possession from nearly the opening whistle, recording its first quality scoring chance in the 10th minute when Kajan put a shot on target that was denied by Seton Hall's goalkeeper, Grace Gordon.
After several close calls, the Red Storm finally broke through in the 44th minute. The sequence began as Scoma sent a long pass up to Cabrera just outside just the 18-yard box. The Rego Park, N.Y., native rocketed a left-footed blast to the right side of the cage, giving the Johnnies a 1-0 edge at the half.
St. John's nearly added onto its lead in the 63rd minute, as Kajan sent a shot to the center of the cage that was denied by Seton Hall's netminder.
The Red Storm continued to push the pace over the remainder of the half, but was unable to add an insurance marker. The Johnnies' defensive unit held tough, limiting the Pirates' looks at the cage to lock in the victory.
St. John's returns to action on Sunday afternoon, as the squad continues its two-game road swing with a trip to Omaha for a showdown with Creighton. The two teams are set to kick off at 2 p.m. ET.
