Red Storm Rolls Past Baruch, 107-43, in Exhibition Action

Julian Champagnie leads the way with 19 points and 13 rebounds
QUEENS, N.Y. – The St. John's men's basketball team impressed in its lone public exhibition of the 2021-22 preseason, defeating Baruch, 107-43, on Wednesday at Carnesecca Arena.
Five Johnnies finished in double figures, as the Red Storm shot 62.0 percent (44-of-71) from the field in their first intercollegiate game on campus with fans in the stands since March 1, 2020.
The Red Storm dished out 26 assists and forced 19 steals against the Bearcats while winning the board battle, 56-24.
Preseason First Team All-BIG EAST selection Julian Champagnie posted a 19-point, 13-rebound double-double. Last year, Champagnie tied for second in the league with seven doubles-doubles en route to earning a spot on the All-BIG EAST First Team and sharing the conference's Most Improved Player honor.
Joel Soriano scored 13 of his 17 points in the second half and made all six of his field goal attempts on the evening. The 6-foot-11 Fordham transfer also pulled down six boards.
Tareq Coburn added 13 points on 6-of-8 shooting while Aaron Wheeler chipped in 11 points on 5-of-7 shooting.
Making their Carnesecca Arena debuts, Rafael Pinzón scored 10 points while O'Mar Stanley tallied eight points and five rebounds.
Veteran guards Stef Smith and Montez Mathis impressed in their first exhibition action with the Johnnies, scoring eight points apiece. Smith added six assists while Mathis tallied a game-high five steals.
Reigning BIG EAST Freshman of the Year and Defensive Player of the Year Posh Alexander stuffed the stat sheet with six points, 10 assists and five rebounds.
Former junior college standout Esahia Nyiwe sank his lone field goal attempt of the night and pulled down eight boards in just 17 minutes of action.
Of the 13 St. John's players that saw the court on Wednesday, all but one logged a bucket.
Baruch held even with the Red Storm over the first several minutes, pulling ahead 7-5 on a Liam Sanborn jumper with 2:35 gone in the game. From there, St. John's scored the game's next 17 points to move ahead 22-7 with 10:20 to go. Seven different Johnnies scored on the run.
Four minutes later, the Red Storm utilized another lengthy run, netting 14 unanswered points to take a 31-point lead, 48-17, with three and a half minutes to go in the opening half.
Leading 57-21 at the break, St. John's quickly embarked on a 23-0 second-half run to put the game even further out of reach.
St. John's will play its first official game of the 2021-22 season on Nov. 9 when it welcomes Mississippi Valley State to Carnesecca Arena for a 7:45 p.m. tip.
