Three Johnnies Tally Wins at ITA All-Americans

Bhakar, Vila Antuna and Guberman earn victories against top collegiate talent
TULSA, Okla. (Oct. 3, 2021)- St. John's men's tennis players Udayan Bhakar, Yaron Guberman and Axel Vila Antuna combined for four wins at the ITA All-American Championships this weekend.
The trio was joined by senior Ignacio Garcia at the University of Tulsa, as all four competed in the 256-man pre-qualifying singles bracket. Overall, The Michael D. Case Tennis Center welcomed over 400 of the top players in Division I men's tennis for the annual tournament.
Bhakar had the best finish amongst the group, advancing to the Round of 64 in his first appearance at the event. The senior recorded an opening-round victory over Abilene Christian's Daniel Linkuns-Morozov and moved past Indiana's Luka Vukovic by default. On Sunday, he fell to Liberty's Josh Wilson in a match that went the distance 6-1, 4-6, 4-6.
Vila Antuna continued to look strong in the early stages of his Red Storm career. The Lamar transfer outlasted Nick Beamish of UT-Arlington in straight sets before dropping his next match to Arizona's Herman Hoeyeraal by a score of 4-6, 1-6.
In his Red Storm debut, Guberman captured a marathon third-set 10-8 against Kenner Taylor of Texas A&M to slide into the Round of 128. The freshman was bounced out of the competition by Ohio State's Andrew Lutschauning.
The fourth qualifier, Garcia, won his first set, 6-4, but dropped the next two and fell to Jacob Bullard of Arizona State.
The Red Storm will return to the courts on Oct. 15 when they head back to the University of Pennsylvania to compete in the ITA Northeast Regionals.
