Ella Rogers scores in the 49th minute for the Musketeers
The St. John's women's soccer team fell, 1-0, to Xavier on Thursday evening at Corcoran Field in Cincinnati.
St. John's dropped to 6-3-2 (2-1-1 BIG EAST) while Xavier improved to 11-1-1 (4-1-0 BIG EAST) on the season.
Ava Collins, the sophomore from Auckland, New Zealand, recorded a team-high three shots while Zsani Kajan, the Red Storm's leading scorer, tallied two. Isabelle Aviza and Frederique St.-Jean also picked up one shot each on the evening.
Between the pipes, Naya Lipkens played all 90 minutes for the Red Storm, turning aside five of Xavier's shot attempts.
The Musketeers put on the pressure early, recording four shots in the opening 11 minutes of play, with a trio of those chances coming off the foot of Xavier's leading scorer Chloe Netzel.
The Johnnies registered their first quality scoring chance in the 13th minute, as Kajan put a shot on target before her try was smothered by Xavier's keeper, Olivia Jenkins.
Over the remainder of the opening half, Xavier continued to control possession, outshooting the Red Storm, 7-1. The Johnnies' backline held tight and managed to keep the Musketeers off the board, as both teams entered the half scoreless.
Four minutes into the second stanza, the Musketeers' Ella Rogers found the back of the net to give Xavier a 1-0 advantage. The sequence began as Netzel sent a towering pass to Rogers inside the box. Rogers then headed the ball down before corralling the rebound and sending it home for the game-winner.
Starting around the 61st minute, St. John's began to control possession more thoroughly in its search for an equalizer, firing off three shots in the span of just three minutes.
With less than three minutes to play in the match, the Red Storm threatened two more times including an attempt on goal from St.-Jean in the final seconds. The Johnnies, however, could not find the back of the net and send the contest into overtime.
St. John's returns to action on Oct. 10, as the squad welcomes No. RV/24 Georgetown to Queens for a 1 p.m. meeting.
