Correa finishes with a team-high 18 points

The St. John's women's basketball team dropped its first road contest of the campaign, falling to Stony Brook, 72-60, on Sunday afternoon at Island Federal Arena.

Preseason All-BIG EAST selection Leilani Correa paced the Johnnies in scoring with 18 points. Dating back to last season, Correa has finished in double figures in 10 of her last 15 games.

Graduate student Camree Clegg joined Correa in double figures, chipping in a career-best 13 points on 4-of-9 shooting from the floor, including a 3-of-6 mark from beyond the arc. The Westland, Mich., native also capitalized on both of her attempts from the charity stripe. In addition to her scoring output, Clegg dished out a team-high five assists.

Rayven Peeples, who led the Johnnies in scoring on Wednesday night in the team's home opener against FDU, pulled down a game-high 11 rebounds on the afternoon.

The opening 10 minutes of action was a back-and-forth battle for the two programs, with St. John's (1-1) leading, 21-20, at the conclusion of the quarter.

The trading of blows carried over into the second stanza, before Stony Brook (3-0) unleashed a huge run. With the Johnnies leading, 23-22, and just under eight minutes to play in the half, the home team went on a 20-8 tear to take a double-digit lead at the intermission, 40-29.

At the break, Peeples, had already pulled down a game-high nine rebounds.

Stony Brook grew its lead to as many as 19, 52-33, in the early minutes of the third quarter. Midway through the period, St. John's began to chip away at the Seawolves' lead, converting on a trio triples to get within 13, 59-46, after 30 minutes of play.

Stony Brook continued to control the momentum over the final frame, ballooning its advantage to 21, 72-51, with a little over four minutes to play in regulation.

The Red Storm squad made one final push over the last three minutes, firing off nine unanswered points to trim its deficit down to 12, 72-60. That was as close as the Johnnies would get, as Stony Brook came away victorious.

St. John's returns to action on Nov. 17, as the Johnnies travel to The City of Brotherly Love for a 7 p.m. meeting with Temple.
